When I started configuring my racing rig for MSFS I looked around here for advice and didn't find much. It is a unique setup and treaating it like driving doesn't work well. So I thought I would share my experience. I usually run in VR but getting this set up was for sure a 2D endeavor.

I put together this short video to demonstrate what a 2D rig is capable of:

An airplane is generally very smooth even a small sport plane like the Extra 330RT. This means that it is better to use smoothing filters. This is kind of a personal thing because the more filter you use the more lag that results. It makes a world of difference when flying.

One issue is that surge and sway either are not working or don't work for me. Also, they may take away from what you expect. Any input on those would be appreciated.

So I have set up roll, pitchs and heave only. As you can see from the video landing on a grass runway is pretty rough, thats the heave. This is the only place I don't have filtering.
    • Roll 35, Smoothing Filter 20
    • Pitch 35, Smoothing Filter 75
    • Heave 20, No smoothing
I did some min-max tuning on the pitch and roll so that the rig stayed about the same place on the monitor WRT cockpit graphics.

You are correct, tuning a motion profile for General Aviation is very different to that of race games.

Do check out the tuning tips in the FAQs, in particular the need to initially do each axis separately, which you may want to focus on for sway and surge: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/steps-to-create-a-motion-profile.228/

As per the FAQ tips for GA you can get away with up to 80-90% of both the available roll and pitch axis, as you will rarely be in circumstances where all axis are maxed out at the same time. More discretion is needed for aerobatic and combat aircraft.

SimTool v3 has the added bonus of different ground and air settings, so that is worth checking out.

    Thanks, I’ll check those out.
