Im ready to jump into making 6dof -

    Hello , finished my 2DOF about 4 moths ago and ready to get back to make new 6dof motion rig.
    Ambitions were great, but finances were not so here whats going on - as an inspiration I will use the simplicity of the DOFReality H6, with lots of corner cutting on motors/pots/drivers e.t.c I had plans to do all this on servo motors +gearboxes as Thanos and noorbeast pointed out, but got hit with expenses which I did not expect or knew month ago.


    What I got at this point:
    • 6x wheelchair motors (ebay) Im guessing 240wats and 110-125rpm or so gearbox

    • 6x IBT-2 drivers (have couple spare ones as my 2dof rigs works on them for a while , so I trust them)

    • 2x24v 600w LED psu (need one more)

    • 4m 25x25mm steel profiles
    • 4m 30x30mm steel profiles
    • random bits and bobs
    • some cheap pots for testing purposes, Im still not sure if its credible site to buy hall effect pots and am wondering 180 degrees or 360.
    • wires/couplers/random stuff from 2dof build which I bought in excess to spare from waiting myself when I burn something or ruing mounting (yes it happened before so Im accounting for it)

    Still need 3 gas struts,12 rod ends, lever arm, 1psu, a bit more common sense

    Base is coming soon started cutting and welding bits.

    If someone can give quick answers on these questions would be happy.
    1. Software side - do I need to something to do in simtools - (download a plugin or something) I've learned i need 3 arduinos to make 3 pairs of motors.
    2. Gas strats newtons 300-400-500? (answer 300N)
    3. Hall effect pots, Im in EU - Latvia Can I buy there? (Trusted and tested pots?)

    Nothing special to do on the SimTools side, just configure each individual Arduino in Interface Settings.

    1. Made three of these, not the prettiest one's but they seem sturdy enough to do their job, still have to weld gast strut mount and I need to figure out pot mounting since it has just one shaft so I will be at the end of that.
    2. Plus applied non conductive thermal paste to IBT2 to improve heat exchange, dont know if thats a major improvement but it seems it has to be there, on my 2dof rig they do heat up even with fan blowing on them.

    As for tomorrow it will be raining and since all work is done outside it's an unwanted holiday from build :(

    Ok, I'm too impatient and worked in rain. Grinding and welding all is doable ;) small sprinkle rain which lasted daytime was bad, but it's not enough to stop itchy hands.
    Hex + motor mounts are together. :)

    So we move on to next delay for me.

    Now I have silly question about rod mount and CTC rest angle. If we are talking about 2DOF its clearly 45degrees, but what about 6dof? Is it the same? I want to give platform enough motion and responsiveness for VR, but am careful not to overload motors without correct rest angle. Is it inverse 45?o_O

    • CTC is 6cm - same as my 2dof (less or more will be seen in future)
    • CTC lever inside or outside? (Silenchill said moved inside for more stability, so I will experiment too)
    • Angle - inversed from 2dof ? Same resting is 90deg

    P.S. Got these cuties for rods :cool: m10 + rods + 15x15mm profiles to strengthen them.

    Googled a bit and got back to forum where @noorbeast gives proper explanations on CTC lever and angles

    SilentChill gives more inside for rods inside or outside - for stability
    Delay solved - now I have to look forward to another day :cheers

    Simtools 2.4 (DEMO) doesnt remeber interface settings.
    Used my mom's laptop (lenovo t430 and windows 7 local russian)
    SMC3 see's motors and all works in pairs, but main thing is simtools doesnt control them or recognize.

    Unicode language didn't do any changes what so ever. But solution was found, project moved from cold attic (+3 ) to my room, so my 2DOF rig was dissembled and moved out. After some pressing of the buttons main pc started communicating with Arduinos and Simtools used them properly :cheers I dont know what I've done, but it sorted itself and Im not complaining while it works.

    Now it moves, albeit I got sick after 3-4 min since movement is not correct and axis are messed up (by me since I took bad example)

    Do we have here some proper example of 6 axis? See below solved
    or how which CTC do what to simulate all effects?

    And brieflie discovered FlyPT mover software but skipped for now since seemed to complicated, does it work with arduinos?



    After asking so much question I hope someone will pass by to look at them and possibly give answers. hug:

    Alright got sorted with motion albeit not yet to full my liking.
    Made some graphics to easier understand what goes where, maybe it will help to someone else too, so im sharing it.

    Still having some issues with motors and power delivery, but thats expected 2x psu one 24v 14A, other 24v - 20A, and thats for six motors, they get barely warm and 3rd stall on testing. At least I can move on.
