Look in the folder, (My Games\DiRT Rally\hardwaresettings).
Do you have a file cfg.BAK?
is there a file named "hardware_settings_config.xml" there also?

yes. the cfg.bak file is there.
also tried to dirt plug in above, but it made my simtools crash so I installed the dirt rally 2.1.1.0 plug in again.

Are you on a single PC installation of simtools?
Are you trying to run SimVibe at the same time? (maybe they are conflicting?)

update: I finally was able to get dirt rally to work with simtools (and what a great experience it is).
However, I still get 'you have to run a race first' every single time I patch the game. I also have to manually add the patch directory, but it works now.

Not sure what or why it decided to work, but it was a combination of luck. I would try plugin 2.0.0.3 and it would patch just fine, but it would crash simtools every time I tried to run the game. I tried to keep using it, and it kept crashing. Then I would remove the patch and install 2.1.1.0 which would not work as it kept saying I would first have to run a game, and then when trying to manually patch the directory it would say 'patch not installed'. After going back and forth between 2.0.0.3 and 2.1.1.0 (game running/ game not running/ and all combinations I could think of) I installed 2.1.1.0 and when I went to patch the game I noticed it was already patched (!?). I tried the game - and it worked! However, when I unpatched it and tried to patch it again, I got the same error ('run a game' / manually patch = 'game not patched'). So now I had to try to replica what I had just done, which I did not remember, but after installing/uninstalling 2.0.03 and 2.1.1.0 a few more times, I was finally able to manually get 2.1.1.0 to accept the directory of the patch, and for some unknown reason I am now able to patch/ unpatch and use it with Dirt Rally.
Only issue is (as mentioned above) every time I patch it I get 'run a race first' and then I have to manually select the directory. BUT the most important thing is that it works 100% in game (and it saves any setting etc).

    Thanks

    :cheers Well done!
Maybe I'm getting something wrong here, but you are supposed to only patch the game once. Once patched, SimTools should always capture the motion data. Can you explain?

I don't know what the issue is. something is not working properly in regards to patching. but once I manually select the directory it patches and works flawlessly in the sim.
Dirt Rally is the only sim that is giving me an issue, and it took me a very long time to finally get it to work. AC, PC2 and iracing all work fine out of the box.
