HTC just released new development tools that open up AR possibilities in a VR headset: https://www.roadtovr.com/vive-pro-t...s-to-htcs-new-tools-for-front-facing-cameras/

    Here’s a demo in a Portal-like environment:

And the really cool part is what this does for the folks with motion platforms and cockpits with dials, switches, and gauges. All they need to do is green screen their windows and they can mix a live video view of their real-world sim cockpit view with the VR world out their windows.

It’s not out yet, but if we can get Valve to make it integral in SteamVR, we can have it work in anything that passes video and tracks through SteamVR.

Of course, they still don’t have motion cancellation in SteamVR yet even though they said it was on their roadmap. To be fair, only a few people added in on the thread in Steam Support where I asked about that. As long as we appear that niche, it will take others with more popular applications to make it happen.

But now it’s clearly possible. It’s just a matter of adding a chroma-key function and picking if VR replaces what is green or what is not green (for making green keyboards and mice or other objects visible) and maybe tuning the color to key on.
