VectionVR is looking at the Open Source OSVR Head Mounted Display as another opportunity to implement its motion cancellation software, which marries motion simulators and Virtual Reality: http://vectionvr.blogspot.be/2015/04/going-osvr-way-part-1.html

Motion cancellations subtracts the movement of a motion simulator, say for surge, so the user does not feel like they are bobbing up and down relative to the VR horizon when the VR tracking camera is separate to the motion simulator. Motion cancellation is a must for motion simulators with large degrees of movement and sharp forces when using the Oculus Rift tracking camera, as mounting the camera to the rig creates tracking issues.

The downside of VectionVR stabilisation for the Rift is that it has to be applied to the game source code via a modified version of the Oculus LibOVR. The approach taken for the OSVR HMD eliminates the need for compiling with the game and thus is a far more generic solution.

I am really pleased VectionVR is looking at options for a generic motion cancellation solution. Motion simulators and VR are made for each other. However, it may well be Valve's recently announced Lighthouse VR tracking system could be a generic capable system for motion cancellation linked to the far more advanced Vive HMD...time will tell.

The Vection VR blog link works, if that is what you mean.

I am not interested in getting the OSVR dev kit but for those who may be it is now on sale at US $299.99: http://www.razerzone.com/osvr-hacker-dev-kit

The OSVR Hacker Development Kit is designed to be user upgradable, so you can swap key components within the HDK like optics, displays and faceplates. However it is aimed at developers not consumers.

It's a brave manufacturer that comes to market now with the Oculus so close to a consumer release.
I know I would not be looking at any 'alternatives' until Oculus comes through with the goods.

Just way more examples of Oculus use (and support) in the market at the moment.

The beauty for the consumer has to be in the number of perceived choices, which will keep the consumer price tag competitive.

(Just hope the AU dollar picks up a bit before then)
