Osvr now has a SteamVR compatible consumer version: http://www.razerzone.com/au-en/store/hdk2

There is a recently released 4k hmd, but it is only 60htz and no positional tracking, so I would give that a miss.

A local guy has a business renting time in a race car simulator. His uses an Oculus Rift CV1. The visual experience is very nice.

For my motion project I am starting with a cheap VR headset solution -- a phone in a VR headset holder.

My phone is a refurbished LG G3 which has a quad core CPU and a quad density screen. Any high density screen will do.

My VR headset is a HooToo VR002. Why this brand? Because each eye can be individually focused. I need that for my eyes.

I tried Trinus VR which streams a game window to your phone but I found it to be too CPU intensive for my PC (Intel i7). Instead I am using an Nvidia GTX video card which comes with a video stream server and the free Moonlight phone app. Almost no PC CPU load. This combination also needs Tridef 3D to make my driving game display side-by-side.

Then you need a motion tracker. The sensors in a phone are not designed for this application and loose center after one head movement. I also tried some different webcam tracker solutions which didn't work for me at all. Finally I went with EdTracker and it works great.

Hi! On Ebay u can look a DK1 HMD kit. It can be very cheap sometimes and u can upgrade it to your own way.
Back in 2014 was a nice solution for DK1 users. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/riftup#/
Need to ask if they have a piece of this Upgrade kit for a friendly price but i think its worth to try.

    Hi @ferslash ,
I have one. Something like Rift DK1,for testing purpose it's really good, but if you wanna play more, and cheap of course, look for chinese VR. They have really good solutions now .

That site has a link to their sales site, and I see they no longer accept orders. When they did it was $259. In the specs I see that it does not update the refresh rate, which stays at 60Hz. I don't think that is enough refresh rate when you are spending that much money on both a DK1 and an upgrade kit.

This year I had the opportunity to use a race simulator with all of the high end equipment available out there, and got to try the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift DK2, and Oculus Rift CV1. The CV1 was hands down the best experience. The owner of the system speculates that the higher refresh rate of the CV1 is why I was not experiencing the same motion sickness symptoms as with the other 2 VR headsets.

I am not a gamer so for my project I am knowingly choosing a very low cost way to get a VR experience and instead spending my money on developing my own motion seat.
