Hello @SilentChill. This post is a great build, and it has really helped my team start planning our senior capstone project. Can you better explain the reasons why you switched from worm gear motors to linear actuators? What are some of the advantages/disadvantages of both, and which do you suggest for our 6DOF VR Xplane sim?

A major difference is that linear actuators are significantly more mechanically efficient.

Taken from SeatTime forum, not a direct answer to your question, but a statement for ball screw efficiency:

Ball screws are around 90% efficient, worm screws around 65% , tried belts -noisy under load. Direct drive ball screws is a win for me.

@SilentChill I have a question about this part:

    upload_2016-10-9_16-55-52.png

This is 3D print right? What's the filling percentage you used for it?
    Thanks.

I cant see the picture matey ? But from what I can remember I used 50% for most of the stuff I printed apart from the wheel QC which was 100%

I directly attached the carbon tube to the ballscrew with carbon. The v-wheel mount is to stop the ball screw spinning and also to connect the belt for the Hall sensors.

Wheel QC was suppose to be QR lol sorry :D "Quick Release" for the steering wheel

I wouldn't have understand QR either, so don't sweat about it.
That means it was 50% filling, but not fully supporting the bond between the carbon tube and the ball screw. Make me wonder even more...
    Thanks for the info.

this thread is at 44 pages now - its not easy to read it all in one go, sometimes easier to ask a question.

i plan to build a linear actuator at some stage, i will get deeper into when the time is right

perhaps you could post the the specs on the first thread as a summary

    Craig,

I have a 6 month old little girl that will be running around soon. I am a Private Pilot and have a real life fuselage I'm interested in building a motion platform around. However, I'm afraid of having the high power motors and actuators in reach of my child while I'm entrenched in flying the plane. The room is open so there is not an enclosed wall or door around the sim.

I guess I could build a small fence around the sim and tie the gate into the emergency kill switch.

What are you doing to keep your boy from getting around your platform while you are operating it?

    Thanks,

    Jake

fit a door and link it to a kill switch

or keep the kid safe in the sim with you !
