Hi all, it's coming along nicely - but I needed time to chime in, it's a completely new world for me, especially the Razer HDK 2.0 which is an alternative headset on the market in comparison with VIVE and OR. After one week testing I would like to share the updated Pros (to Cons?), unfortunately I have no more time for a deeper review, I'm on business until next week (China). Updated content is red...1 point bad, 10 points good.
    • I'm wearer of glasses, no glasses needed (diopters cover +4.5 to -2 adjustments). Dual lens system design that allows to change the focus of individual lens on the fly. Confirmed. I can wear glasses, lens or no glasses (-2.5 diopters). 10 points
    • Upgradable at every time. I had to update the LEDs using a new firmware (you may use a ST-Link/V2 programming micro controller). For that procedure you have to open the case. Try this with a VIVE...10 points though not everybody likes to open it's headset (NTL it's easily done and members from xsimlator.net are good craftsmen :)), if one part is broken and not covered by guarantee you can replace all parts here https://osvrstore.com/.
    • Almost no screen door effect in comparison with all other VR solutions. There is a SDE, but after a few optimizations the SDE is almost unnoticeable. 8 points
    • Display features 2160 x 1200 441ppi dual-display technology (1080 X 1200 per eye) and frame rate of 90 hz (we are on the same layer here in comparison with Oculus and Vive) No comparison here, because I dunno the other headsets. Screen is bright, there is a noticeable smearing in dark scenes when turning my head. Games like AC are fine. 8 points
    • The field of view is 110-degrees and not 100. The FOV is great. I cannot measure it, but it is sufficient. 8 points
    • IR (infrared) camera (100hz) for positional head tracking (has been broken 3 months ago, different reports about users they got it working now), since version 0.6.1924-g5affce6 tracking is significantly improved. Even you can move around and face all directions without losing tracking. This was first a nightmare, positional tracking with the camera still doesn't work out of the box. I have run into loosing tracking, juddering, yaw drifting. I have spent a lot of time to resolve this. Now tracking is very smooth (only tested in the racing seat), users say behind of 90° you could loose tracking, which I cannot confirm yet. I had to update the firmware (seperate programming tool needed), drivers and finding the ideal position of the tracker. Only one thing is left: after 10-15 minutes you have to recenter, this can be done by using a hotkey (key binding, button box etc.), I hope this will be solved somewhere in future. For lack of time I could not test any motion with the Razer HDK. 7 points (quality of the tracking itself is 10 points)
    • IR works daytime or night (Confirmed)
    • Comfortable to wear with soft foam padding (confirmed by many users, a few are complaining as usual ;) ), acceptable weight. Confirmed, the eyes have to be exactly centered, if not the picture is immediately getting unsharp. Big impacts coming from the simulator could have an influence of the fit, not yet tested. 8 points so far.
    • HDK Windows Installer, one click installation, no (more) issues with the installing. Confirmed, 10 points
    Final words 05-06-2017
    • The 2160 x 1200 441ppi dual-display is pixelated at far distance, it's the state of the technology and not different on other headsets using the same resolution.
    • SteamVR-OSVR supports (now) distortion correction.
    • PC Crash: a few games in SteamVR are crashing my PC (shut down and restart), mostly when entering the VR mode: Lunar Flight, Senza Peso.
    • More and more SteamVR OSVR games available, especially the most common games DCS, ED, AC, pCars etc.
    • Visuals are good, text in E: D is readable, E: D is amazing in VR. No latency on tracking, yaw drift is annoying but (still) acceptable at the moment.
    • Personally: virtual reality sickness does not occur :thumbs
    • The Razer HDK2 headset can really hurt the nose, if you are a long nose guy please keep of lol. Using contact lens or (0 diopters) the lenses are too close to the eyes, the eyelash is touching the lens.
    • I do not regret buying the HDK. It's amazing and after running into a bunch of issues first, it's not perfect, far away from that, but better than my triples even on 3DVISION.
    Cheers,
    Pit

Update - still experienced judder creeping in after 10 - 30 mins making a racing game pretty unplayable if you turn the head to the right side (POV is jumping side-to-side and back-to-front a few inches).

The judder seems to be a result of the velocity data coming from the new unified tracking system. As reported either the tracking system is sending incorrect data or SteamVR's tracking prediction stuff is crap. Still no solution in sight, though the devs are looking for a solution. Restarting the OSVR server helps as a workaround (restarting server via batch script). Aside form this, all is working fine and I wouldn't miss this very good headset anymore. NTL until this issue is not going to be solved, I cannot recommend the Razer HDK 2.0 as an alternative for the OR and Vive.

At least you tried and save someone else spending lots of $$$ :D

I'm sure it will get better as time moves on however I think it will always be 1 step behind the big companies with all the resources they have to develop and research.

JFI: the workmanship of the headset is outstanding, latency, frequency, picture quality, colors, FOV, comfort (except for long nose vr nerds), and also tracking as long it goes. Obviously the tracking bug could be eliminated by an OSVR user, he rolled back to version 0.7.0 while using other/newer drivers or scripts. So I expect a patch soon.

I do not recommend this headset for anyone who likes plug&play only. On the other hand, the HDK 2 is on its way which makes me optimistic. Well, we will see.

just for fun, I could not resist posting these links:

Of course, mostly it works ;) Please do not understand my comment as an offend, it's just I'm a bit of a joker :) There is no doubt, OC and VIVE are way more consumer friendly than HDK at the moment.

My comment related to SteamVR tracking prediction, that is rock solid. There are other sources of potential tracking issues, such as poor setup, reflective surfaces with the Vive and other IR sources with the Rift, with USB also being factor, particularly with the Rift.

    HiAll!..

    my 5 cent worth.
    I've had my HDK2 since October 2016..
had the usual upgrade to IR board & IR Camera and Headset firmware updates..

    Had Solid tracking... always..

run periods of up to 4hours without drift.. (I know 4 HOURS!! - It's not good for you.. - But I Dev & Model in VR on some applications)

So for the long run.. I'm Super Happy with my HDK2..

    Kindest Regards
    Gordon

hi, just curious what makes your hdk2 not drifting and all other HDK2s drifting...osvr Reddit community is full of complaining users, the issue is officially confirmed, also the SteamVR judder issue. Eventually you did something different so honestly would you share your steps what you did and what not. Thanks.

Hi Guys.. Apologies for late reply.. Not on here too often..

I Truly cannot say why I don't have the drift issue (Or at least don't notice any discrepancies).

My current setup is as follows (Environmentally).

My VR Station is in a Closed off "Room" no external Lighting (LED Lighting to avoid all Fluorescent light interference. Headset is(I would Guest-a-mate) to have around about 4-meter clearance around it with no Electronic or metal in the area (I am researching a aka-Room Scale setup). Also to avoid Magnetometer interference. As for the Actual Physical Make-up of the building We could guess for years.

    Running on 0.8.0 installer

Maybe just maybe I got the Odd-one ;-)

But if anything changes or I Notice any thing drifting. I'll immediately post something.

Although I still have to say.. In my opinion.. The HDK2 is still nicer than the DK2 or CV1 - in My opinion... Albeit lacks a set of decent headphones...

    Gordon.
