The visuals/optics (not colors, particularly blacks) are better on the Rift S, if you are in the fixed IPD range, but the outside in controller tracking is better on the CV1 than the Rift S inside out tracking, and the CV1 audio is way better than the Rift S.

Can I ask what your budget is, as there are also other potential options such as the Reverb (best resolution), Pimax (good resolution + widest consumer priced FOV, but fiddly) and Index (good resolution, improved FOV, outstanding audio and likely best overall refinement).

In that case the Rift S is new, so gets you warranty, there will likely be a bunch of CV1s hit the second hand market as people go for the Rift S but keep in mind that the CV1 has a known issue with the audio ribbon breaking, plus being used may have other wear and tear issues. So longevity wise, if you are in the IPD range, then likely the bang for your bucks is likely the Rift S, you can also upgrade its audio with clip on PSVR headphones, which are similar to the original CV1.

Can anyone comment if the Rift S tracking is working well with motion rigs? I have seen people say its good, others say it doesn't work. I would put more faith in the opinions of this forum than the others, as users here actually have motion rigs. I have a Rift with my sensors mounted to the rig currently and it still loses tracking on occasion.

I got a cv1 and then got a rift S was to be used for the sim rig 2dog seat mover and the rift S to me is use less in Dirt Rally, it's far too sensitive to movement and the screen judgers about as the cameras respond to the slightest vibration.
So I had to ditch it and run the cv1 again.
It's like having an old video camera with no stabilization or picture control and sticking it on a rc car it's just so jittery it's hard to see.
Not sure if there is anything I can do tbh to stop it.
Nicer picture but just dont work for me.
I can see it working in a tame environment tho.

I think the problem with the rift S is hanging of a bracket on the new head mount system so its shaking about as its not fixed firmly to you face like before, so the dangling effect is there its not solid mounted to my head around my eye like the cv1 is so i think the m,ovement is that not so much my head more the fact it can bobble about a small amount hanging with no support for the frame.
