Hey @value1 - I tried to find what it is but can't quite make out the markings. Your photo shows them best but my JRKs are now buried so I can't make a high res photo. Nothing is showing up on DigiKey from what I can make out.

Might be a case or having to contact JRK and ask them?

The traces headed to it are a bit bigger than the LED traces nearby so I think it might be something to do with either selecting power from the local 5V regulator or from the USB connector but not sure what it actually is.

How it blew might lend a clue?

Now this is how it should look:
    Jrk ok.jpg
And that's the picture on the Pololu site:

Does this shed some light into the type of blown IC?

And apparently another Jrk of mine got already excited in the past:
    Jrk still working.jpg
    But it's still working (I think…)

@value1 - I can’t say for certain but just from proximity and that the traces appear to come from the right locations, think those two chips with RD on them are back to back diodes so either the USB or local 5V supply can feed the board. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a match to know for certain or what the rating is. And the three terminal chip has slightly different markings - ASMA vs ASHV - so I think there could be a date code in there or maybe a value/manufacturer change but still can’t sort that out either.

That one that overheated still works does point to it maybe being a way to use two different power sources and that when in circuit both are actually active. I think it may take contacting Polulu directly to get the parts specs if you want to attempt repairs. The board itself may have damage making the traces unbonded which would make repairs more difficult.

What caused these? That could be a clue to what went wrong in the circuit.

Look up 'smd as' you get a list of possibilities, you then need package type and manufacturers logo.
Most smd with codes work this way.
    probably

Thank you all for your efforts to help!
It's an old JRK , where the feedback function died some time ago ☠
and I just used it for programming✍.
The JRK plugin was not the original distributed with SimTools but a modified version that sends the feedback of the JRK back to SimTools.
The JRK laid under the desk essentially unprotected.
And finally GameEngine was crashing shortly before I smelled the incense .
So not one single reason I could point to and call the culprit.
I contacted Pololu, as I would like to understand what fried the JRK and how to prevent (especially in case it was the modified JRK interface).
