I was given a htc vive cosmos elite from my employer as a bonus.

Testing it last night I'm definitely up for a gpu upgrade.

What would you tech savvy people recomend?

    Current specs
    Amd ryzen 5 3600 3.6ghz
    16g ram
    Raedon rx580 gpu
    700w psu

Or is there settings I can adjust to make it run a bit nicer? I'm full vr noob

My view is that when it comes to VR, especially for simulation games that are not always fully optimised for VR, buy the highest end Nvidia GPU you can afford.

The 40 series of Nvidia cards are about to be released, so you could wait a bit and buy into that gen, or if you are looking at the budget what likely will happen is that the release of the 40 series should put downward pressure on 30 series new and second hand GPUs. Just keep in mind a lot of the higher end 30 series of GPUs on the second hand market were flogged to death as part of the crypto boom.

Yes, I agree to buy the best Nvidia GPU you can afford. There aren't many games where AMD outshines Nvidia, but there certainly are many where the opposite is true.

What games are you playing? Some are almost unplayable, despite using top-tier cards, namely Assetto Corsa Competizione.

The key to optimizing VR is similar to playing on a monitor: lower the graphics settings. Turn off shadows, reflections, and any additional effects that do not detract from the core gameplay. You'll need to do your best to keep the framerates steady so that you're not experiencing any hitches and stutters. Smooth and fluid gameplay is of utmost importance.

If you're using SteamVR, then lower the super sampling resolution as low as you can tolerate. It'll look terrible, but it does wonders for keeping the FPS up.

If you can afford it, please buy a new GPU. As they say "there's no replacement for displacement", and that certainly holds true with GPUs and VR. I've spent days tweaking my computer & game settings only to realize that a GPU upgrade made it seem meaningless.

I just upgraded this week to an rtx3080.
It has really transformed my quest2. I'm now able to Max out my resolution on the quest, and it's stunning how good it looks now.
Highly recommend the 3080 or better for vr. Yes it makes that much difference.

Agree to the posts above, and it looks like DLSS 3 will be a real game changer for VR (and only available on RTX 4000 series) - so you should maybe take that into account when making your decision.
Nevertheless, using the OpenXR Toolkit is also a good way to optimize VR experience. I am currently using a RTX2070 Super, so not too far away from your card and I'm playing MS Flight Sim in VR just fine (with drawbacks on the quality of course)

... need to update after seeing the announcement of the new AMD cards (RX 7000 XT and XTX) - these could be real contendors when thinking about the price.
I will be waiting till January to evaluate my GPU upgrade and it will most probably be decision between RX 7000 and RTX 4700

RTX3090 and HP Reverb G2 work well with MSFS at high settings.
I'm not sure an RTX 40xx would make such a big difference but that's just my guess.

I recently bought a new graphics card for racing in VR.
AMD 6800XT and 69(50)XT's are dropping in price very much and are truly beasts....
A Ryzen 5 3600 might be a bottleneck when updating the videocard, so keep in mind that this needs an upgrade to.
