    Hi all,

I'm in the final stages of wrapping up my sim design before I embark in the purchasing process, and have got one last dilemma! I've decided I definately want a 180 degree wrap around screen, but am unsure whether to go for a curved screen or a three panel screen with substantial radii joining them together. I intend on using 3 HD projectors (Mitsu HC4000 seems to be my best bet at present) and possibly some warping and edge blending software, namely Warpalizar which appears to be very well priced! My only fear in running a curved screen config as opposed to a 3 panel screen is the focal depth issues brought about by projecting an image onto a curved surface.

According to my calculations, each projector will be projecting an image of 2.21m (Wdith) and 1.25m (high) with a maximum screen depth of around 25-30cm (throw distance between3.1-4.6m). I've asked around on the projector forums but nobody really has any idea on extreme curved surfaces as most focus on home theatre configs.

On the other hand I could play it safe and go for the three panel arrangement, but I wonder how good the immersion sensation would be...

Any opinions would be much appreciated!

    Regards,

    Julian

    Hi Julian,

    nice project going on

If I ever start a project like this I would go for the curved screen without hesitation simply because I personnaly hate the angles between the screens on a 3x flat panels setup... It kills the immersion even without bezels...

Videos of sims on curved screens using Warpalizer looks amazing! No more screen angles causing image distortion

Thx for sharing! Now I want my own curved screen!

This one is very similar to your drawing and the FOV looks fantastic!

Here is a DIY project of a 130 degrees curved screen. It's more for home theater but contains a lot of usefull infos that might help you in your project. You must be logged on to view the pictures ...

Thanks for the input Bleco. Yeah I have stumbled accross those videos, very nicely sims! The first rig is base performance sims, that one is 42 (GBP) thousand if I m not mistaken!!!

My only worry is that the projector won't be able to produce a relatively uniform focus picture...what do you think?

I don't think this will be a problem especially with Mitsubishi projectors!

So in my case teh spot height is around 25-30cm (i.e. maximum depth?) Now I'm just deciding on graphics cards to power the 5769 x 1080 resolution! I'll either be going for 1 or two Radeon HD 6970's :)

The res will be 5760x1080 and using one single 6970 will be more then sufficiant ...

    I currently have 3x 28 @ 5760x1200 on a HD6970 and it is holding up pretty good!
However, you need a nice CPU to keep up with that.

Anyone up for testing 2x 1920x1080?
    Any focus limitations?

Bleco, maybe after you get your FullHD projector, we should get together for some testing on a home made card board curved screen or something like that! :)

    Cheers,

    Erick

    Hi Erick,

It could be cool, I'm up for it if you have a DIY screen to test ... I am not near starting this kind of project on my side...

But I think it would look way better with 3 PJ's ... Check on youtube for curved screens using 2 PJ's, it doesn't look good ... but maybe it's just a config issue ...

I was talking about making a simple cardboard curved screen just for fun.

Watch this video, seamless edge blending with warpalizer!

That looks great, much better than 3x720p IMHO!!! What do you think?

    Cheers,

    Erick

    Hi Nima

I have a single projector setup, currently projecting onto a flat 2.4 x 1.45 metre screen. I want to try a curved screen for better immersion. I have some sheets of white painted metal sheet 3 x 1.5 metre to do some tests with.

I have downloaded NTHUSIM standard to test, but the cost is quite high. I notice you have been testing the VISOSO presenter pro software. How do you get rfactor to display onto the visoso panel?
I can see that the warping controls work very well, but I can see no way to get rfactor to display. Can you help me?

    Thanks in advance

    Deaks

    Hallo,
I've just build a curved screen and I will use it with my Vpr Optoma GT1080darbee.
Do you know if there are any conflict or issue with simtools 2.2?
    Thanks
