And for those that don't want to print anything the pot is actually the same size diameter as a 1/2 PVC pipe fitting...The black cover was available from the gearbox supplier

Ah I was more curios on the brand from the quality aspect side, Some of the cheaper low end cars really skimp out on quality metals and tend to slop out rather fast, Not that there's really any load on this joint, But something to keep an eye on over time for sure. :)

Well I am out of town for the rest of the week so no real updates (have to work to pay for this thing). Did a little painting before I left town though

Well I haven't had much time to work on the rig (life keeps getting in the way). I finally have 3 motors wired and hope to get the other done 26112850521_8bc24aac38_o.jpg 26086738652_00b2e0342b_o.jpg this weekend

Big tumbs up again for publishing your dimensions of the platform, base and also your fantastic log!
I am doing a sketchup model based on these dimensions, just completed the platform., now ist time to get used to sketchyphysics.

As I was looking at your buildlog I was wondering , what you think would be the minimum strength of steel bars for the platform. You are using .125'' steel (3.1mm). Do You think, one could also build the platform in 2mm steel, to reduce a little weight? Also I wonder wether that would make the welding process harder.

Also I would like to ask you, if you also had considered a "cage design" as done e.g. @SeatTime.
As I have littel head room in my garage I was considering going towards such a cage design but I have not found anything close to the level of detail as your plans.

I actually think 2m would be better as my rig weights a ton. It's not going to make any real difference when it comes to welding. The only challenge I see (and I have given it a great deal of thought as I really liked the design) in using a setup like @SeatTime is the platform would need to be big and that would main the whole rig would need to be bigger as the rod should be on perpendicular to the floor.

I am recycling a computer 1/2 rack for the electronics (I borrowed the idea from someone else) 26240510242_e355eb1e7e_o.jpg

Personally I went with 3mm. If you are going to ARC weld then it will be much easier with 3mm.
If your using a cheap mig then 2mm would be easier to get full penetration, a decent mig then dosent matter.

Theres not much difference in the weight of 2 or 3mm, id go with 3mm personally for the extra rigidity.

Control cabs looking good GA ;)

hope your electrics go a bit smoother than mine, still fighting my way through issues at the minute.

@paulg100 well I too have problems with EMI or ground fault. Starting to isolate the problem. I ordered some caps today...Thanks for the post on that.

from my tests with the oscope you can put 1 x 0.1uf cap at each end of the pot wire, put 1 at each end of the 24v (a/b) wir.

noise may be coming from the mains feed to cab but each VFD acts as a switching PSU so allot of interference comes from the VFD its self so the caps will help clean the loop.
if you put to many on the same feed it starts to cause other problems though.

I used those in combination with the B013 parameter and the A082 in the wj200 you can get everything nice and quite.

Basically all the signal cables leaving the cab will act as an antennae for emi to dump back into the loop so if you have other cables like for emergency stop switch then sticking a 0.1uf at each end will help keep the loop clean. same if you use hardwired limit switches.

are you familiar with the star grounding principle? if not look it up as it will help sort your ground routing out.

i ran a "pigtail" to ground the sheild at each end of power to vfd and each end of power to motor

hope some of that helps. there tons of info online if you google for vfd wiring.

Well I made good progress today. I mounted the 24v power supply and controller in the computer case. Looks good and it "should" have enough EMI shielding. The AMC1280 is mounting on an old ATX power supply. 25865997124_5d3a0c31ed_o.jpg 25868035243_16b58e1c48_o.jpg
