I have a bad news! i installed the JRK 12v12 and plug in to the computer and started smoking! I do not understand why it burned because i did tested and fallow the inatallation guide and it work ! Now the only thing i did different is that i plug the USB cable to the back of the computer to a "USB SS" plung.

I think the USB SS it has more volts or higher amps, have any of you had this happend?

See picture of the USB Plugs:

Hmmm... as far as I am aware, SS (SuperSpeed) is the old standard for USB3.0 before computer makers started making Blue ports for USB3.0 and white ports for USB2.0 (black is USB1.1)

The voltages are identical I think. My system only has USB3.0 and the JRK's are fine on it.

Sorry about the blown JRK. That sucks!!

Did you have a motor connected, or just straight USB, nothing else? No 12V power or anything??
If you reversed the polarity of the 12V feed somehow... that can smoke a JRK...

On the output side no power connected, i think the USB cables are the cause i had those cables in the attic and humidity got to the contact of the plug. See pictures of how they look, the JRK burn at the USB connector.

Keep in mind that i bench test both the cables and the JRK prior! So i am still clueless?

Did you bench test them connected to those motors? I feel like you had power going through your motor and your rig being all metal carried it through your POT to the JRK maybe.

Good point but I have the pots isolated from any metal contact it connects with plastic bridge and the base of the pot is plastic.

Did you try running a test to see if you are getting any voltage off of your motor housing? Did you becnch test motor attached?

An update on the JRKs i call Pololu tech support and they ask for pictures and ask few question, Pololu notice i was using a "Heat sink" and that i may by accident touch the boad components with the heat sink and that was the reason of the JRK smoking, so Pololu recomended of NOT to used "heat sinks" that if i need to cool the JRKs down i should used a fan instead.

FYI: also that Pololu do not offered "Warranty" of any kind on any of their products, however they offered me 20% off for the next purchase.

Hi @Milton Amaya - Pololu will offer warranty for poor quality product and DOA, however once you plug stuff into a JRK, Pololu have very little control over what happens then / next. I can see their point. 20% off is still good :)

Put a continuity tester on your heat sink and start touching the USB shield and ports, see if you get any circuit. I use Heatsinks with a fan and never had an issue...

It's odd... I just can't see 5V at 500ma causing that amount of damage...

Maybe strip a USB cable down to expose the Power cables (Red and Black) and measure the volts coming from your SS ports. I notice you are using a Server, so maybe there is some fault on those ports sending 12V, or a whole bunch of amps, down the line.

strip the cables and I got 5.01 volts, I also did test the heat sink for continuity with the USB port and got nothing, I think if there was any connection with the heat sink is now been broken by the burn, I will have to wait until next year to purchase two new JRKs.

Sorry to hear that @Milton Amaya - I really can't fathom what would have melted the ports like that.

If pololu wants us to follow those direction's, I can GUARANTEE they will be seeing a heck of a lot more melted JRK's in their service center. There's NO WAY physically possible to cool the JRK's enough With OUT heat sinks. I find it rather amusing they actually told you that. lol

Curious what all components is the Heat sink touching ? Just the main chip ? Or is it touching the caps or anything else ?

Yeap! pololu said that to me over the phone and also they send me an email saind if i need to cool down the board to used a fan, i am surprise that they do not have a warranty and if they do! Techsupport told me they dont.

I found this YOUTUBE video that shows another user having issues with the USB connector been lose it may be related :

I will buy two more to give it another try.
