I’m very new to the motion rig concept but have done enough research on Reddit and various forums to have decided (yesterday) to go SFX100 for my future built. However I discovered this forum and in turn, 6DOF and all kinds of other things today and I want to make sure I’m not missing other opportunities.

I’m wanting to build a motion rig almost entirely for drift, but with intent to do rally+circuit racing eventually. Hoping to purchase a rig, build the motion portion, and likely DIY a DD for around 5-6k so I can justify investing in a rig as opposed to a cheap 350z drift car.

Would a simple 4 actuator SFX100 build be the best choice for this use-case and budget? Would it allow upgradeability to Traction Loss (which i still need to research thoroughly) and such? Haven’t quite researched Surge and more advanced things yet but I’m sure I will want to upgrade things like that in the future. I’d love to do TL right out the gate but that seems like it might be above my budget.

Also, is there a recommended rig to use as a foundation for all this? It seems the SimLab P1X is a favorite and I’ve seen good reviews for the TrakRacer rigs.

Unfortunately 'best' is a relative term to a myriad of competing priorities, including cost, complexity, space, parts availability, and personal time, skills and preferences.

You would need a traction loss axis for whatever rig you build, except a 6DOF, which can provide a drift axis.

Any 6DOF is an ambitious first project. So doing some research before getting in any deeper is time well spent.

You will find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs, in particular check out the SimTools, fundamentals of motion and the design sections, plus the 6DOF section: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

As there have been many refinement to DIY actuator design and control search for specific 6DOF projects using the Google Custom Search function on the Recent page, then filter by date: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/find-new/posts?recent=1

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

When you are ready please start your own project thread here, ask any questions you have there and detail your project progress: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

Good luck with your project, whatever that turns out to be.

Wow this is a lot of information. Thanks for all the links as I had somewhat of a hard time finding FAQs and such. This is incredibly helpful.

I’m still very early in the planning phase but I think I’m going to initially go with a 4-actuator vertical setup then upgrade it later on with traction loss (which is what you meant by drift axis, correct?) and then again with surge. I think the 6DOF concept is incredible but outside my reach currently based on budget, knowledge and useable space. That’ll have to be a consideration later in life.

First step regardless will be getting a rig, as I’m currently on a playseat challenge.
