Im leaning towards a full platform build with the winch motors (which are really cheap btw) and amazon prime gives me free 2 day shipping...so i'll have my racing seats in on thursday, the JRKS should be here by friday, the winches could be here by thursday, and I went to my local steel supplier and stocked up on enough to build one platform sim and a static frame for my little brother. All in all its starting to come together I think. I'm going to pull the trigger on the winch motors.

Full frame will be good, I suggest screen still though, not attached to moving frame as they tend to wear out faster, but its up to you of course.

I definitely don't want to swing an expensive screen around in the air....it can stay put. The next question is power supplies...then I think that i'll be well on my way to getting this thing finished (physically) before christmas. I'm a dreamer, I know... but i like to stay positive

a car battery of at least 300 CCA and a charger will do the job well

Obviously connect pots to the motor lever somehow , I use gears and a multiturn

    Hi Matt

I just have some theoretical knowledge about motors and have built my sim with winches, actually using these: Arwin TRC9202 (last page of the catalogue), 2'000 lb traction
So your 2nd and 3rd winches are certainly good options. Nevertheless for my joyrider type (rotating like 150kg) I would prefer to have more power. Your 1st link is certainly too weak.

For reference purposes I attach a file where you can calcultate the performance curves of your motor: torque, power output, efficiency etc.
You'll need to measure the current and rpm unloaded ILeerlauf/IM1 and nLeerlauf/n1.
And you measure the current when stalled IM2 and n2=0.
Alternatively and prefereably IM1/n1 and IM2/n2 are measured inbetween.
The calculation will give you a table with Current, Speed, PowerIN, PowerOUT, Torque and Efficiency.

You can calculate the necessary torque for example with the Fly Elise-ng Motion Platform Designer (a 30-days trial can be downloaded here I think)

Probably the easiest is just to build your sim and try :grin

Ok....last question for tonight, its 0330 here... Any particular pots that I should look into, and how does one calculate the pivot for a full frame (wheels+pedals+seat) platform...will it just be slightly forward of the seat center of gravity?

I sort of poineered that (2) style of winchs , on a Jrk. @AldoZ to it to the extreme and @value1 built a nice joyrider using them, they are a little noisy and beware the terminals have cap on them inside the motors back face , used for radio noise suppression. Please check with a multimeter that both the power lead and earth lead are separate from the body (isolated) then you will be cool.

Put the frame with you sitting on it and wheel and pedals on a round pipe, roll frame back and forth, get someone to help till you find a balance point, pivot goes there.

I use the Master Lock winches, they work great. A little modding really quiets them down but they are still by no means silent. As far as I can tell, most of the cheap winches in that configuration are built in the same factor with different brand names applied. I also bought a GudCraft at a local big box hardware store and inside the plastic housing they are identical.

Is there any reason that a 1200W pc power supply wouldn't work for a build like this...will the jrks draw too many amps or is it something to consider?

Others have used similar items mate. I use a 12dc battery configured like below for ease.
    12v battery.jpg
but these look alot better and once installed and wire not much cheaper.
