    Hi,

Recently I have tested a 4K VR [ probably the only available on the market solution for 4K ],
    and opinion/results in shortly:

    Pimax-4K-UHD-VR-3D-Headset-7.jpg

    Advantages:
    - 4K resolution screen

    - No SDE [ image is perfectly clear - so can see all cockpit details, colors are more real / natural ]
    - Renders in 2.5K and upscale to 4K [ so present GPU`s can manage all rendering with Ultra settings - my GTX1080 ]
    - Price [ 200 used, 300-400$ new ]
    - Steam VR support [ tested: Project Cars / DCS - works perfect ! had problem with Dirt Rally ]

    Disadvantages:
    - No positional tracking [ 20$ - solved ]
    - 60Hz freq display with bigger latency [ little ghosting on fast moves - but not disturbing ]

    Comparision of SCREEN [ HTC Vive / Oculus CV1 / Pimax 4K ]
This Video "talks" more then a thousands of words ! :)

    Verdict:
It is not perfect, but IMHO worth it !! :) [ Probably will sell my CV1 pretty soon ]

As a VR CV1, and PSVR user [ Vive only tested for an hour ] with 3 year experience in this matter [ started from a preorder of DK2 kit 3 years ago, then upgraded to a CV1 over year ago ] so generally I used most of them for many many hours and was really waiting for something better after such time...
also for me as I get used to best possible solutions from all VR googles, something like positional tracking is simple a must have and lack of this makes VR totaly pointless [ in a cockpit simulators ] - for a Pimax hopefully it can be added without much efford - as I will write in details [ this PT won`t be as perfect as CV1/Vive, but pretty good ].

    Installation:
SW: Pimax PIPlay http://www.pimaxvr.com/download/ - lack of virtual room, only a visible logo of Pimax. It has some demos like video 360, movies VR, and steamVR button :) so its general purpose is to start the steamVR app !
    Issues:
    - if already installed Oculus Home [ for a CV1 ] I had some problems, so I simply uninstalled it.

    Addons:
    1) Positional Tracking,

    - Option 1: NOLO VR [ 200$ ] https://www.nolovr.com
    - Option 2: [ PS Move - 10-20$ solution ]
    My 3D printed VR Tracking Ball [ 0.1 layer / 100% infill - had only a yellow PLA ] :
    [IMG][IMG]
Simple Tutorial of Daley Tech :)

    HW:
    1) VR Tracking Ball and mount ( PS Move Service ) - 3D printed [ but can be a pingpong ball or something ] - I used a 12V LED bulb with a 12V power source [ 12V 1A power supply and cable attached directly to bulb ]
    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2242392
    2) 1-3 PSMove + 1-4 PS3Camera [ I bought 1 camera and 1 move - for about 10$ ]
    3) a Bluetooth adapter [ if PC has - OK, if not buy a 5$ one, even if PSMove is connected with cable ]
    SW:
    1) PSMoveServices, or better PSMoveSteamVRBridge [ with SteamVR support ]
    https://github.com/HipsterSloth/PSMoveSteamVRBridge/releases
[ it was designed for a move controllers, so you can have 1-2 moves which becames Steam VIVE controller, BUT: won`t simple work [ for an HMD tracking ] with a Pimax...
mostly used for a phone HMD and with a VRift [ RiftCat combines to Steam and for a Cardboard google, or phone it works, with PIMAX - WON`T ! [ hopefully there is a workaround ]
    2) FreePieConnector - this is the driver needed for a HMD with tracking ball [ or PS move on HMD ] to work with SteamVR - now is called Driver4VR [ demo let you test for 10 minutes / full version costs 8E ] http://www.driver4vr.com
    3) PS3 Camera driver [ 4.1) CL-Eye-Driver 4.2) [ Zadig http://zadig.akeo.ie ]

    4) FreePie [ actually with SteamVR probably not needed ]

this is first weekend of configuration and playing [ using my 2DOF offcourse ! ] :) I hope you find it usefull, and thanks for reading !

    Best regards

So did the tracking work with the Pimax - or are you waiting for the workaround?

I made "my own" tracking [ Option 2 ] which actually worked with Pimax 4K [ also pointed what is needed + link to tutorial ], I used: Driver4VR + PSMotiontoSteamVR + 12V bulb = SteamVR PIMAX4K with positional tracking.
[ I also can try to help if you plan to build as I did / it was not super easy - like plug & play - need to use couple of programs, do a calibration, etc ],
Here is also a discussion about this on Pimax forum [ I `ve seen there what is needed - someone pointed about this Driver4VR for HMD tracking workaround ]: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/easy-and-cheep-positional-head-tracking/2298/66
in future I plan also an upgrade to Kinect instead of using PS motion [ but when Driver4VR will have a native Kinect support / author Greg - http://www.driver4vr.com/ - is working on this, but it is still in progress ].
also you could use if prefer full Steam Vive solution -> additional HW: 2 PSMove / 2-4 PS3Cameras = Steam Vive controllers with roomscale
[ which I didn`t since playing on chair / also when using PS Move controller just with PSMovetoSteamVR = working as Vive controller with position, but without HMD Pimax position -> so changed to Driver4VR = had Pimax positional tracking with 3Dprinted 12V bulb, but without working PSMove as Vive controller - stopped positioning [ I could use PSMove as a pointer like rotation and clicks, but without position on the move controllers / like only the HMD had PT = maybe there is a workaround, but I didn`t need them both at the same time [ Pimax with tracking + PSMove with tracking, but don`t know ]

@SeatTime - you welcome :) this is good to start:
    1.
    - tutorial with procedure / steps, like how to create a VirtualHMD in ConfigTool [ in AppData/@/Roaming/config -> 1 ] in PSMovetoVRSteam, then how to configure a tracking PS3camera [ use yellow bulb for tracking ]
and when ready, could make exchange of PSMove to only a bulb 12V [ without need of PSMove anymore = only for first configuration ]
    2. change PSMove to 12V LED bulb ->
and when done [ tracking / PSMove working on PSMoveConfigTool ] then for a Steam Pimax Tracking -> add this Driver4VR = all should be ready !

Its looks really primitive but seems to work well.

Could be a option for me just for the sim as the 4k upscaling sound pretty damn good :)

How heavy is the HMD ?

Yeees, this 4K upscaling [ display with 806 PPI ] was the reason I finally couldn`t resist the temptation and bought it [ a CV2, or Vive2 in next year or two - will probably have a better display technology, but why to wait so long ? :) ]
    I found also this description of Pimax4K [ http://m.gearbest.com/pc-headset/pp_423476.html ]:
"Patented low persistence customized 4K panel, it's not full persistence standard panel, so there is no smear issue in Pimax 4K VR Refresh rate: up to 90Hz in binocular frame technology, 60Hz in monocular frame technology"
    - so now wondering how to achieve this 90Hz...
The weight of Pimax seems average according to info: 499g [ Vive is 555g, Rift 470g ]

this is still sort of cheap solution since Pimax 4K costs around 300$ which is not as big investment as customer VR gen.II CV2/Vive2 - will definitelly cost at least 800$-900$
[ I have seen that Pimax is making MK2 called 8K - which actually has two displays of 4K with all tracking stuff, and 200 FOV ! which will be coming in future but is priced at high price level 800$ ! so pretty much... ]
The Driver4VR should have a LeapMotion support available in a week or two -> could be a better solution to PSMove - according to Greg@Driver4VR I spoken today
[ I also have my LeapMotion waiting for this tracking alternative, or will buy a Kinect if sooner supported - also under development - waiting for an improvement to compare to mine light bulb :) looks how it looks, but I don`t care if works ]

I think as long as the image is as advertised and it is not too much of a pain to get working each time I use it, I should be happy. Just basic positional tracking without too much mucking around to enable for use is all I need and a bonus. I already have a set of touch controllers that I don't use .

Depends what your tying to do. Interesting video. What interest me was how he 'developed' the light house system which just happens to work very much like a navigational system that I used to work on in the RAAF called TACAN - Civilian VOR also works the same way (Both have been around for too many years). It used a reference (north)pulse which was sent out on a omni antenna with originally a spinning drum that scanned 360 degrees - but instead of using light they used microwaves that could go out hundreds of miles. The drum was later changed to an electrically rotated microwave antenna - which reduced maintenance and other costs. Food for thought.

@SeatTime - I totally agree - all things should be as easy as possible [ for a common people usage ], in my case: after first setup/calibration is finally done [ a little paintfull, but only once ],
then each time Windows OS start, procedure:
    - shortcut1 [ PSMoveService]
    - shortcut2 [ PSMovebridge - and 2 buttons, set position HMD: 1, set VirtualDevice - always same ID: 0 ]
    - SteamVR
    - shortcut 3 [ DriverVR ] & click start = done
    [ not painfull / for a DOF we also have a 2 shortcuts 1-Engine, 2-Game ].
@judges 10$ gadget... since I bought used PSMoves&PS3Camera for a 10$ :) + a licence for FULL driver 8E [ but could work in demo mode for 10 minutes / restart ] also I didn`t calculate a bulb 1$, and power device which I had - but subjective price is corelated to PS3 PSMoves which are available in each part of the world and cheap - because are pretty "old" types [ for them it is a second life :) ]
CV1 / Vive HW&SW - is perfectly optimised, but there are hundreds of people involved in this project [ development tooks a months and costs milions ] - so hard to compare VS like you said simple gadget and SW created by Enthusiastics - which is not as perfect solution without a doubt.

    I have a DIY 3D printer = I love it ! a DIY 2DOF = I love it ! and Pimax4K with DIY PT = I love it !
[ buying a ready things is nice & easy... but if you can make something it is also a priceless experience which money cannot simply buy ! ]

I searched for a 4K VR for pretty long time and haven`t found any alternatives to Pimax4K, I also see each "issue" [ like lack of PT ] as a "problem" [ each problem must have some simple solution / @1_solution -> I used cheap PSMoves, but have in mind a 2@NOLO, or 3@LeapMotion-4@Kinect for an upgrade ]
    - BUT at the moment IMHO it is USABLE + SteamVR works + 4K + PT = so I am really HAPPY with PIMAX 4K :)

an issue of my version of "Option2" tracking with Pimax4K: HMD is loosing orientation after some time in game - it helps to have a reset button configured on controller [ I set a resetVR in ProjectCars in button of my G29 ] + but sometimes also need to do the HMD reset, since it is not possible to set some button, need: alt+tab -> PimaxApp -> re-center [ like mangetometer seems to be rotated in horizontal / a compass drift, example: I move forward but positioning is going more left, solving: PImax recenter + VR Game reset.
It is like I can run full 8m Nurburgring and OK, when sometimes need to do reset 2 times a minute [ probably depends on how often I rotate the HMD, or maybe camera looses headlight due to mount on top - maybe will try to mount it in front of the HMD. I can live with that, but it is not perfect.

Drifting is to be expected, which is why Oculus and Vive also use positional tracking to keep their systems in calibration. Like many have said a DK1 with a '4K' screen.

Yes, exactly positionalT is compensating all rotation drifts [ but need more points of IR lights on HMD ].
PSVR is using couple lights sources to calculate orientation/position and is working pretty perfect. Maybe instead of 12V bulb should position a PSMove controller [ with definitelly more precise accelero/magneto-meters ] - maybe the drift will be less noticable.
Since a $ preffered solution - @NOLO has some kind of HMD controller with single light source - looks pretty much like a smaller PSMove but with single "disco" light... or if the next version of D4VR will have a LeapM/XKinect alternatives - I`ll need to investigate.
