I just finished taking my 2 dof rig for some PCars2 test drives after getting the throws all set and sorting the motor directions for the various forces. Still need to tune the forces but they are in the ball park.

    In VR. :grin

So wild to have the traction loss throw the cockpit side to side even though I don’t have traction loss per se. And feeling the acceleration and braking, the curves, the curbs, etc. And this is without wind connected up yet or GameVibe since that is still in testing - but I’m ready for it as soon as it’s released!

Still got some adjustments to make and a bit more work to do, but driving in VR is a trip. I’ve been driving an office chair with a bass shaker on it running on audio and that was great, but even just 2 dof is such a trip. Completely transforms it!

Got to get wind set up and vibes whenever available, and need a change to the belt tensioner, but man! If anyone reading is on the fence about building a 2 or more dof for simming, it’s wild! I don’t regret a single penny I’ve spent on this thing! :thumbs

Looks like a sweet build. What was the total cost? What 2 dimensions does the rig cover? front back, left right?

and are those wiper motors? :D

@Blame73 - Yep, still optimizing it. Mounting up the wind stuff. Was working on that last night. Made some angle mounts to aim the wind and just need to mount the circuitry and fans. Got some tweaking yet to do on the seat belt tensioner too and still need to mount my stick and pedals for flight, but it’s really close to done.

Still lots to do but it now runs and had a blast this last weekend with it!

Your rig looks very nice, Zed! Congratulations.
Side note: I did not know that the Umbrella Corp. is producing seat belts. Thought they are more active in the virology business. :)

hehehe - Reading your post reminded me of the first time I built my rig! It's an awesome feeling when a game comes to life via your Rig. All those subtle things like rumble strips, losing grip, feeling the gear changes...

    Well done!

You are doomed now. There is no cure.

I notice your tagline is "Eternal Tinkerer", @Archie... :cheers

I just got done putting in a few hours racing at Daytona in the old open wheel Grand Prix cars that don't have down force on them and they are slippery at speed. I ended up have a few big crashes and it's a good thing I had my harness on tight! I got surprised with just how much force that rig can throw at me. I don't know that it would have thrown me out, but it was a lot of force and in VR it was a trip! Had my first flights in it too - awesome! I am so glad I built my motion platform. It just adds so much! This website is a huge resource for this stuff and the software is phenomenal. I am truly doomed. :grin

Still have some things to work out though and it's tough to choose between working on it and going ahead and driving/flying!

@Zed - Not sure if you enjoy rally games, but wait till you get a DiRT rally profile all sorted and then slide off the track into a tree at 160mph! BOOM!

I've had to dial mine down as I was getting a massive whack in the back of my head from the seat going forward so violently!

I get so immersed in VR driving games with Motion. DiRT Rally is the only game though where I actually do "fear" a big off.
I can't even begin to imagine how amazing it is with a 6 DOF that some of the guys on here have built.
Still my dream to build a 6 DOF... one day.

About immersion: yesterday I was playing AC in VR (there's just vr for me, without vr support I don't even buy the game).
I use one of those little wireless keyboard with trackpad and after adjusting the setup of my Porsche GT4 I laid it on the passenger seat...
Of course I don't have a seat near my rig and I realized it when I heard the keyboard falling on the floor into pieces...

@Archie - no worries about this thread. It’s really just a thread I posted after being so blown away by VR and motion. There’s no real point to it or anything to distract from. Looking forward to checking your video this evening! And 6 dof is very tempting. Those are the Cadillacs. I hopped in on Thanos' controller Kickstarter just to explore, which was probably the good kind of mistake.

@Blame73 - I know what you mean! I didn’t set anything on my passenger seat but the temptation to reach out and use the VR gearshift, brake lever, etc, is very much stronger now. It’s kind of strange but very cool!

Where did you get the motion platform from? I would love to have something like this under my seat. I run a simlab p1 rig

Hey @Mohamad Ballout, I’ll post a build thread coming up but still getting the final bits in place. Built it myself with lots of ideas and information from here. I used Mean Well SE-600-12 600 watt 12 volt supplies, pgsaw (eBay vendor) 50:1 gearmotors, JRK 12v12 motor controllers, and an assortment of other parts and pieces for vibration, seat belt tensioning, wind, etc, all on a frame built from 80/20 Inc 10 series aluminum strut. I started this process last March and just now got it where I can start driving, flying, etc. with it. It’s way fun and this thing is a performer. I slammed a wall at speed yesterday at Daytona in a Lotus Type 38 Ford after I got sideways and my wife thought I was cursing because I was upset. I had actually just gone for a very unexpected ride while my car went flying and I was being thrown back and forth, forward and back and was cursing because it was just so wild of a ride. I had just finished running the Tuning Center to get SimTools to know what values to expect and the crash probably was hitting the controller logical stops over and over.

If you’re thinking about motion, I really recommend it. It transforms simming big time with VR.

Oh man that looks great. I think that would fit perfect under my seat on the rig. I have no idea how to go about this and start as I have never done anything like this lol. But I want to make it motion so bad haha. I wanted something like the next level motion platform or if there is anything already pre made like the one you have. Looks awesome man and you did a great job. How much did this all run you for the motion?

@Mohamad Ballout - Thanks! I honestly don’t know the total cost, though. I bought parts over the whole time I was building it and didn’t keep a log. Plus I did extra stuff that added expense like the bar graph ammeters, seat belt tensioning, etc. If I knew what I would spend going in, I might not have decided to do it, but I’m very glad I did. It shouldn’t be hard to price out your own build. Just price the stuff you know you need and see where that takes you.

People here have managed very economical builds by carefully sourcing parts and their choices of materials, plus how much you do on your own. Motion platforms do tend to be a little speedy, though, and you can see all sorts in the showcase.

    Good luck!
