WLAN card/stick and WLAN repeater/booster for PC

    Hi there,

    we're planning to move the office and game-simulator-guest-rest-fun-room :clap: upstairs (where we will have little more space), but the main telephone connection is downstairs, so the DSL splitter and the WLAN router have to stay where they are right now.

    When I'm surfing the internet upstairs with my notebook, I have a reasonably stable connection, but it's not that good. Now I need a WLAN solution for my PCs. I'm wondering if I should take PCI-Cards or simple USB WLAN-sticks...

    Do you have any suggestions on further hardware like WLAN repeater, WLAN access point or something else to boost the quality and speed of the WLAN connection (my router supports connections up to the g-standard) ?

    I've also seen the Devolo solution: Two boxes that transfer the DSL line over the power supply system - any experience with that ?

    Hi Chris,

    die Powerline Adapter funktionieren meist ordentlich, wenn Du ein sauberes modernes Stromnetz hast. Mit Altbauten und deren Stromnetzen soll es Probleme geben können. Auch kann es sein, dass wenn Du an einer Steckdose keine vernünftige Verbindung bekommst es an der nächsten in unmittelbarer Nähe funktionieren kann. Ein Versuch ist es dennoch wert.

    Mit W-Lan Repeatern habe ich gute bis mittelmässige Erfahrungen gemacht. Wichtig hierbei um soviele Probleme wie möglich auszuschliessen und nicht die grosse Konfigurationsorgie starten zu müssen, dass Du am besten DSL Modem und Repeater vom gleichen Anbieter verwendest. Sonst kann es sein, dass Du im schlimmsten Fall nur WEP oder keine Verschlüsselung nutzen kannst. Die Router/Repeater kommunizieren zwar über einen gemeinsamen Standard aber jeder Hersteller verfeinert hier sein Süppchen mit etwas anderen Zutaten. Mein Tip: versuch zunächst DHCP zu nutzen, dass die Geräte sich selbstständig finden. Statische Adressen haben mirschon schlimmste Lauferreien durch die Wohnung beschert, wenn sich die Geräte nicht gefunden haben, ich den Repeater wieder abstöpseln musste um den an PC anzuschliessen, auszulesen, einzustellen, um die Box dann später wieder in der anderen Ecke der Wohnung kabellos aufzustellen, und das zigfach in der Wiederholung :)

    Nutze hauptsächlich Netgear Geräte.

    Gibt auch noch die Möglichkeit der Verstärkung der W-Lan Signale über selbstgebaute Antennen, z.b mit nem Klobürstenständer*grins* Ist kein Witz, bringt eine DB verstärkung:

    danke für Deine Antwort.
    Habe mir gestern mal zwei Fritz!WLAN USB Sticks mitgenommen... ein Freund von mir hat damit gute Erfahrungen gemacht und ich denke, es müsste auch mit meiner 7170 gut zusammenspielen.

    WLAN Router kann ich glücklicherweise recht nah in den offenen Treppenaufgang stellen, falls die Verbindung nicht ausreichen sollte...
