    hi all

i'm putting together a shopping list of stuff to buy for a 2DOF moving chair type mosim. i like these gearmotors
    https://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-drive-motor-12v-24v-200w-180-rpm-20nm-torque.html
with a 12mm stainless rod shaft.

my sticky point is how i'm going to connect this to the chair? i know i need some kind of linkage with a universal joint type bearing on each end but i'm having a problem finding anything on ebay or anyplace. maybe i'm using the wrong terminology. can anyone suggest a supplier, preferably in asia?

    thanks

@steveh2112 - Rose Joints are your friend.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/M10-x1-2...468177?hash=item35fdfcc651:g:SR0AAOSwPcVVyWP3

I used four of these, with M10 threaded rod from Bunnings, couple with some M10 Rivnuts to act as spacers to give me full movement.

These are the Rivnuts I used:

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/kincrome-m10-10-piece-rivnut-set_p5910353

Basically, put one on either side of the Rose Joint so the "slimmer" end is touching the bearing. Job done :)

Failing any of that, type ROD END into Ebay for a whole world of possibilities / combinations :)

The FAQ may help you as well.

i found 4x M10 rose joints for $10 on ebay so that's that problem solved. thanks.

what about the central pivot point for the seat? i guess i could try find a universal joint like on the end of a prop shaft from a scrap car. i tried universal joint on ebay but nothing looked right.
    maybe this http://www.ebay.com/itm/12mm-Dia-Sh...ash=item58e2147bd8:g:V8sAAOSwdzVXwTVn&vxp=mtr
but not sure if it's strong enough and it doesn't seem to have bearings

what else could i search for?

maybe 2 pillow bearings like these
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2Pcs-Zinc-A...hash=item3a9ad1e8da:m:mPIJHy3LcQJSr5Dol9-_mrQ
and weld up some kind of intermediate connector

Heim and rose joints are different names for the same style of joint.

The other option is tie rod ends.

See here for some options, other considerations such as the need for conical spacers for rose joints, and a link to the cheap but robust 4 pack tie rod ends @Nick Moxley recommends: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/heim-rose-joint-conical-spacers.72/

A rod can be as simple as a steel tub cut to length with a washer and nut welded either end.

I used a UJ from a propshaft. Cost me $30 for a Falcon AU one and both ends have a UJ on them.
Best thing to use in my opinion, although others have used a UJ from a steering column.

Steer clear (no pun intended) of CV joints. They rotate so will need extra support to stop torsional twist.

Fwiw, the plate steel used on mine is a Wee overkill. My welder does a lot of heavy duty stuff so the thicker plate was available to me.

If you can track one down, you can use a Tamping plate as the base. I looked for one for some time but for some reason they are stupidly expensive...

Just an idea in case you see one on "council clearout" day :)

You just have to find one that has a collar wide enough for the UJ shaft.

actually i already built a mounting system for the UJ and the seat. its all plywood, looks super ugly, but easy for me to change and experiment with.

    thx

I did the same. Mine is all wood for base. I just bolted the shaft to wood using L brackets. Working with Metal is good, but take a long time... I'm better with wood.
