    Hi!
I was looking into motion platforms, and I was wondering what 2-DoF, 3-Dof or 6-Dof stands for?

    Thanks

    Degrees Of Freedom

The more, the better, but 2axis is a good start.

    regards

2 axis allows movement from left to right? --> only in 2 directions?

what would a front/back and left/right motion be considered?

hi! its quite easy.. a totally free object has 6 DoF. the 6 degrees of freedom are the following ones:

    1) up/down (linear movement)
    2) left/right (linear movement)
    3) front/back (linear movement)
    4) rotation on the Z axis (rotation like a office chair)
    5) rotation on the X axis (bend forward backward)
    6) rotation on the Y axis (bend sideways)

XYZ depend on how you define it...

thanos simulator has 2 degrees of freedom. it can bend forward/backward (nr 5 in the list above) and tilt sideways (number 6 on the list)

a object with 0 degrees of freedom is locked in place and cant move in any direction. 6 degrees of freedom is the best, but requires some good tecnical skills to make a 6DOF simulator. usually there are some cnc milling machines which have 6 DOF, that allows them to work on the peace from all acessible directions.

you can easily know how many degrees of freedom your sim has by simply couning the directions in which it can move. or, if it is easier for yu, you can count backwards, so starting at 6, and remove 1 DOF every time you lock the movement in a direction.

    hope this helps.. :)
