Gamers around the world sobbed into their cereal when Facebook announced it had bought Kickstarter company Oculus VR for the staggering sum of £2bn overnight Tuesday, fearing the worst for the virtual reality headset manufacturer. Don’t fret though; even if Facebook takes the Oculus Rift in a completely different direction, a new VR contender. the True Player Gear is on the way, and it could be even better!
True Player Gear has been around for nearly ten years, founded in Canada back in 2005. It has history with virtual reality, and although we’ve never seen any hardware, the company was previously working on a VR headset for the Xbox 360 as long ago as 2006.
Fast forward to the present day, and True Player Gear is ready to make another assault on virtual reality gaming market. It’s readying a Kickstarter project for the summer and hoping to take over where the Oculus Rift left off. The specs certainly look more than good enough to cheer up disgruntled ex-Rift fans.
The full HD 1920×1080 display matches that of the Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, usingOLED tech and offering a 90-degree field of view. True Player Gear has another trick up its virtual sleeve as well, cramming in a couple of 1080p HD video cameras on the front.
Although the cameras are listed on the True Player Gear website under ‘Sensors’, helping to aid more accurate tracking, it would be great if they could also be used for augmented reality, bringing parts of the real world into your virtual games, or even letting you quickly see where your drink is without having to remove the headset. Here’s hoping!
One of the best aspects of the True Player Gear is that it supports some of the biggest gaming platforms, working with PC, the Sony Playstation 3 and 4, and the Microsoft Xbox One and 360. The success of True Player Gear will likely hinge on the choice of games, and with that in mind the device supports a host of different gaming development engines, including Unreal, Unity, Havok and CryEngine.
Are those specs and the additional flexibility good enough to tempt you away from Project Morpheus or Oculus Rift though?
