    As requested by @noorbeast and to not throw too much stuff into my project thread I have started a thread for my DIY CNC.
    I have decided to go with a Fixed Gantry design and a frame made mostly of steel. Sort of a very much cut down version of what this guy built.



    Not much else to talk about at this time (as for most of my projects - waiting for stuff to turn up) - stay tuned.
    Placed it here as it is sort of project related :think.

    What are you going to use as a spindle? I've seen wood routers with metal cutting bits attached used in some DIY setups.

    I'm just going to use the wood router that I already own to begin with. Will see how that goes before investing in a specific CNC spindle. I have a 3D printer coming, which will help in building a few bespoked parts.

    Started on the CNC steel frame - I use a mirror to ensure alignment. FI. Base will only be half the size of the shown 'T'. First corner built this way, as it makes it easier to get it straight/flat.

    I see you plan on using a router. But I was wondering if you might already have the stuff around to make the spindle as well out of a dc motor? Is it something you considered?

    No - my plan is to go with a inverter driven water cooled AC spindle - likely 1.5KW. Similar to this - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1500W-1-...pe-/332190727417?_trksid=p2385738.m2548.l4275 You need high speed and a bit of torque for a usable CNC spindle :). Unfortunately a DC driven spindle would just be a toy.

    That is much larger :eek:. It looks like it's controlled with a vfd. Still looks right up your alley. Having a real cnc will be a huge advantage like the 3d printer. Enjoy.

    Yes it will form part of the mould. Two images back you can see part of the mould sitting on a mylar sheet.
