I've been following the Pimax forum closely in particular matthew xu's comments. A lot of the backers don't want a timely release. They prefer a delay to sort everything properly. Pimax haven't yet managed a steady 90hz through the displayport.

Really curious about brainwarp and how that feels. It sure makes sense from a bandwidth, latency, and CPU/GPU utilization standpoint. My question is why Valve and Oculus didn’t implement it. The advantages seem obvious so I’m wondering what the disadvantages are. Sure hope they can hit 90 Hz though. It’s also good to hear about the retail channel coming up so fast.

Expect substantial delays...Pimax is now using CES 2018 for further public testing and feedback, they have released the Pimax CES 2018 8k prototype specs that will be demonstrated and that lists as unresolved the issue of not making 90hz: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/ces-2018-8k-prototype-details/4802

The latest statement is that "The current ETA is Q2, we will update the status of X asap. We prefer to make it right, so won't rush." http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/ces-2018-8k-prototype-details/4802/13

It’s good they are making sure people get what they expect. It’s just too bad it’s at the cost of when they expect.

Meanwhile, time passes at HTC, LG, Oculus, and others. Curious what they will be showing off and when...

I was always skeptical about resolving the technical issues in time and even more so about the impact of feature creep, in terms of the latter if they are struggling with fundamentals like 90hz then I expect far more issues with the 8KX, controllers and wireless tracking.

I hope for everyone's sake that backed them that at some point they're able to and do deliver what was promised since Kickstarter has no mechanism to recover the $4,236,618 that was collected from backers other than individual backers suing them. However, that would require filing a suit in small claims court where lawyers are not permitted so one would need to travel to Santa Clara County, CA and do it for themselves. Unless you already live nearby its not worth the effort. This is the risk of backing Kickstarter projects.

BTW not really on topic but as you probably know I was part of the kickstarter project. When the project came to it's end my credit card should has been charged, "fortunately" my card has reached it's limit already so kickstarter refused my participation as a result of this. NOW I think differently and I am glad about this circumstance, still waiting and making decisions later on this, what to buy and when to buy.

There are still some significant technical and design issues to tackle and resolve, according to those who got to try the Primax at CES.

Can't say I am surprised as I have said repeatedly a 8k HMD is challenging enough, but what was being touted, particularly with stretch goals, means a ton of technical issues will need resolutions, with feature creep being what I consider is a a significant risk.

    Pimax 8K Progress [Updated: Feb 6, 2018] : http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/pimax-8k-progress-updated-feb-6-2018/5124

    Hi Futurists,

In the previous update, we have shared the iterations of Pimax 8K to give you the context of what has changed in each prototype and why we made the changes. The team was focusing on v5 fine tuning on Jan, and now we would like to share the progress with you:

"Blurring effect of objects." "Blurred objects outside the middle 100 - 120 degrees field of view."
We used new lenses on v5, and magnification changed (please check image as below). The team is optimizing the lenses.

    magnification.jpg2904x1014 595 KB

"Tracking issues" "Jittering and latency issues", "delay" "Choppiness, rotational latency, jumpiness"
We added more LEDs in the backlight panel to improve brightness. The LED current supply to the panel increased as well. As a result, the current supply in other parts decreases and makes the tracking unstable. The tracking is improved already, and we will keep testing with the new mainboards.

Latency - 1. The ATW algorithm was for versions with two HDMI interfaces. As we used one DP and new screens in v5, there was a mismatch. The algorithm is largely improved already.
    2. V5 is the first prototype after the tooling for mass production. It was the very first time to assemble the new prototype, the position of the lights was not perfect, which impacted tracking in certain angles. We are improving the assembling accuracy and the issue will be resolved very soon.

Choppiness - We are analyzing the root cause and narrowing down to some possible reasons. Besides assembly accuracy, the material that covers the sensors would impact tracking, we are testing with different materials. While refining the prototype, the team is conducting comparative trials with the vive.

"Reflections at the edges of lenses" "weird reflections at edges of lenses" "slivers of moving imagery at the periphery."

One of the reasons is the magnification change on v5. Also, v5 is the first mass production prototype, the lenses and the mechanical design of the lenses are both new tooling version. The inner face is smooth in v5, which result in reflections. We will add texture on the surface in the final version to avoid reflection.

    "mura"
It would be an individual case, we didn't find mura during the tests, but we are still watching.

"eyes were straining a bit to keep the images fused"

IPD and the center of the image were not well aligned. the lens shift was 8.97, image shift was 11.06, the graphic below shows the misalignment.

In the next iteration, the lens shift and image shift will be the same and aligned.

Besides, automatic stepping was 1.6mm. We have changed the stepping to 0.2mm so the IPD adjustment will be smoother.

    "Comfort"

The team is testing different straps and optimizing the design of the headstrap and headset ergonomics.

    "Build quality"
V5 is the first prototype after the tooling for mass production, the build quality will be improved in mass production.

Thanks a lot for your passion and support! We are looking forward to updating you again in March.

    Latest update from Pimax.

    Hi Futurists,

In the last update in Feb, we have shared the iterations of Pimax 8K and updated our solutions to the issues of v5. http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/pimax-8k-progress-updated-feb-6-2018/5124
Meanwhile, we have filmed several v5 through the lens videos to give you a better idea about what it looks like inside of the headset: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPbhtvUh5U4eakeb5qHYLWg6

After the national holiday (when our vendors usually take annual leaves and start getting back to work by the end of Feb / early March), we have synced up the progress with the team and our vendors, and here is the current status:

    Timeline

We suppose to receive the new T0 lenses from our supplier in Feb, however, we didn't get the new lenses until yesterday. It requires around one week to test the new lenses. We will start the production of M1 after the testing of the lenses, and then move to M1 testing. If everything goes well, we will have the M1 units ready in early April.

As planned, we will ship a few units of M1 to a small and closed group from the community to take a close look. Based on the result, we will give you a more realistic shipping time of the final version. Given the current progress, we are looking at a delivery window of Q2.

    CES issue list

"Blurring effect of objects." "Blurred objects outside the middle 100 - 120 degrees field of view."
As mentioned in the previous update, we used different lenses in v5 thus magnification changed. We have already optimized the lenses and eliminated the blurring effect.

"Tracking issues" "Jittering and latency issues", "delay" "Choppiness, rotational latency, jumpiness"
The factors that may impact the tracking are narrowed down to a few: the position of the LED lights, algorithm, paint. When two lights get too close, it may impact tracking, we have adjusted the position of the lights. The design of the mainboard fixed and the impact of the additional LED lights to the current supply is eliminated. We are keep testing and conducting comparative trials.

"Reflections at the edges of lenses" "weird reflections at edges of lenses" "slivers of moving imagery at the periphery."
We have optimized the new lenses and added texture to the inner face to avoid reflection and eliminate stray light.

    "mura"
It would be an individual case, we didn't find mura during the tests yet, but we will keep monitoring the issue while assembling and testing M1 units.

"eyes were straining a bit to keep the images fused"

We have aligned the center of the image and IPD, i.e. the lens shift equals to image shift. The stepping was changed from 1.6mm to 0.2mm to make IPD adjustment smoother.

    Controller / lighthouse progress

Starting from the M1 prototype, we will adopt SteamVR 2.0 tracking in all of the controllers and lighthouses with TS4231 chips.

    lADPACOG84IoiQXNAjbNAuQ_740_566.jpg740x566 27.7 KB

In April we will have a working sample of the controllers ready. We will share the new design of the controllers by the end of March.

    Refresh rate

M1 will be stable at 80Hz.

The team is aiming to improve the current prototype for now, and we have assigned a separate team to study the refresh rate.

    Beta testers

There will be very few testing units and we already have a lot more backers on the waiting list. The next step is to double check the number of units available and then announce the tester list in the forum. A tester should meet the criteria as below:

    • Pimax 8K Kickstarter backer

    • Trusted community leader, professional reviewer, or both.
If the number of the backers that meet the criteria is larger than the number of units available, we will select those nominated by Pimax community the most and those offer the team generous help during Kickstarter campaign. The tester list will be unveiled by the last week of March.

    Best regards,

    The Pimax Team
