Well is seems thing change fast in the flight sim world.

A little over 2 weeks ago Orbx was laying out plans for supporting X-Plane, but that seems to have crashed and burned, this week it looks like Orbx is abandoning X-Plane development now and into the future: http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/128535-project-x-not-happening/

The Orbx plan this week now seems to be continued development for FSX/P3D and an expansion to support Aerofly FS 2.

At least they were up front about it. I am a little leery of the direction Davetail is taking FSX and it's turning into somewhat of a curated shop for add-ones. And so far Dovetail has shown little inclination to support VR which in my opinion is so necessary to take flight simulation from flat world to a truly immersive, 3D, actual size, experience.

I've got Aerofly FS2 and it's beautiful in VR, but after a bit you feel strange with such a sterile and lifeless world. Hopefully they fix that with AI and multiplayer but for now it's more eye candy and a bit boring after a while.

That basically leaves P3D and FSX which still deliver premier experiences so I can understand Orbx concentrating on them. FSX has fundamental limitations since it's basically unsupported now. P3D, which has the training side of the house, has a very restrictive license that keeps its adoption down and the training world's needs are at least a little different from fun flying. All you have to do is swear you won't use it for fun to be able to buy it, and they have an education license that's reasonable, but that puts people off.

We really need a good consumer flight sim that is supported, where the devs have the same vision as the users, and isn't a big step backwards from what we can still do with FSX. With the announcement of native VR support coming and Dan's FlyInside filling the gap until then, here's hoping the X-Plane devs do really well with 11. Pulling down the demo now...
