Thanks Nooebeast, I was only today made aware, of the discounts.

    Do you nave one?

If so; is it better than the last 2 iterations?

I've tried both, and was unimpressed (much screen door effect, I think it's called)

This is a problem as I run 4K monitors, and nothing seems to come close!

    regards Jerry.

Yes I have a current gen Rift with Touch, the Vive with Deluxe Audio Strap, some GearVRs and of course my old DK2, DK1, I even have some Vuzix 920s I got before the second coming of VR was even a thing.

The current gen Rift and Vive are a significant improvement over the DK2, but still years off 4K resolution. But for VR enthusiests such as myself what VR gives away a bit in fidelity it more than makes up for in immersion. You may look at a 4K screen, but in VR you are inside the actual game, be it in a car, plane or interacting with the VR world itself with first gen tracked controllers.

I have to second what @noorbeast said. Instead of seeing what you are doing on a monitor, everything appears as if you are actually in the sim with full depth perception, everything appears to you in full size, and so on. It's as if you are actually there and actually doing what you are seeing. Even more than that, your brain has evolved and all of your own experiences have reinforced that what you are seeing is reality so your brain makes the leap and accepts what you are seeing as reality and even smooths over inconsistencies and hides them from you. It's very remarkable.

The effect is so strong that nearby cars and nearby aircraft trigger fear responses in me when I'm doing it. Crashes carry a bit of trauma with them too even though you know it's not real. This is why there are reaction videos where people may scream or take off running into a wall when people put them in jump scare types of experiences. VR is now such an experience and you can do such cool things that there is even a jarring effect coming back out of experiences and finding yourself back in your home instead of still being in space, in a plane, on the track, etc.

The DK2 was good but the Rift and Vive both improve on that with better resolution though it's still not on a par with monitors - especially 4k ones. Tracking on the DK2 was pretty good but room scale tracking (which requires buying more on the Rift than just the $400 base package) really expands the experience. The DK2 was also slow with a 72 fps refresh. Rift and Vive both now run at 90 fps. The DK2 had bad color fringeing but Rift and Vive basically eliminated that but traded it for "God rays". Those aren't bad or even noticeable in outdoor simulations like racing unless it's night racing.

Hard to say if you would like the current gen better than 4k monitors. VR isn't perfected yet but it's really amazing. For equal detail and effects, VR can take a more powerful computer to run than monitors due to rendering two scenes per frame and doing it at higher frame rates. One thing of note is that it is very common that people who run VR will say they now just don't have interest in games/sims that don't have a VR mode. (I'm in that category.) As for flying, instructor pilots think it's an amazing tool for students to learn flying patterns and approaches because the students see everything in 3D like they are there and they see the same thing they would see in the air for real. One guy on another board who couldn't fly any more for real said he just started crying when he strapped on a Cessna and started looking around since it just looked so natural.

But to each their own. Best way to know is to try the current gen and see what you think. Only thing is if you notice any stuttering, something isn't right and you aren't getting the full experience. Many push their systems too hard with too much detail or special effects and that compromises the immersion in other ways.

And it's only going to get better.

Hi Zed, I can tell this VR experience has made you passionate about it's use.

I will have to find someone with the latest HMD and an appropriate application for a test.

    Lets see where this goes.

    Regards Jerry.
