I have stuck to stereo ever since I got serious and got a usb dac and set of nice bookshelf speakers. Even then putting on a set of headphones whenever I start up a game.

What are some of your thoughts on surround vs stereo? Are you focused so much as to not really notice the multichannel sound or do you rely on it awareness of other cars?

I'm always in VR so I just use the headphones on the rift. When I was desktop I used surround 5.1

I do have VR, and with the new sim rig, hope to use it more so headphones will be my choice as well. Though it is a Vive and plan to exchange for a Rift since AC doesn't have native support for the Vive. iRacing I have seen detects it but don't have a current subscription.

Not much beats a Proper Bubble of 5/7.1 Audio coming from the proper physical directions. Tho Very Space hungry....its well worth it in the end.
