    You could make homemade string pots with the springs from cheep tape measures.
    Once you find the right size tubing for the sting to wrap around, they are pretty easy to make.

    You can connect then to the cylinder with pipe straps.

    The string could introduce some error in the position, but great results could be achieved if done properly especially with multi turn pots.
