Motors for gimbal

    I would like to build a gyroscope/gimbal based simulator and have the idea of mounting direct drive motors to the pivot points. I will try and draw up what I mean and upload it later but hoping that people might have some input in the meantime.

    So each pivot point will have a motor directly bolted to it and driving the motion by spinning the pivot. This means a 1:1 drive ratio. Given that the gimbal will be balanced the amount of force required will be minimal so I don't think it will require too big a motor.

    My main concern is driving the motor slow enough and reaction times with the 1:1 drive.

    Does anyone know of any motors that may be suitable.

    What form of motion simulation games do you plan to use this with?

    Large axis movements may look impressive and suit flight simulation, but are not always a good choice for race simulation.

    Currently using Assetto Corsa

    The main thinking behind this is not for large axis movements but for simplicity.

    But if I can get a setup for the occassional flight thats always a bonus.

    I have been investigating further and I think I have a better solution than direct drive. I think it may be better to mount the motor directly under the pivot and use chain and sprockets.

    Is there any benefits of linear actuators over a chain or gear drive?
    Are they smoother, faster to react or stronger(more robust)?

    Linear actuators are more efficient than worm gearboxes, where the latter can have significant mechanical loss, like 40%.
