    Hey all,

I was playing Dirt Rally this evening when one of my motors went mostly slack. I noticed it was making a little bit of a high pitch noise when it was trying to move one way on it's axis. I notice that when I turn it on and try and muscle it in that direction it is sorta soft and I am able to move it unlike the other motor.

It still come to position when I turn it on, and when I test its movement in simtools or smc3 I can move it in one direction but the other direction it makes that winey noise and moves very slowly to the position if it moves there at all.

I took a screen shot of SMC3, this is when it's idle and I turn on Sine movement. Notice how the PWM is not doing what I would expect. Also my target green line drops down as if the pot was rotataed out of range. The pot for this motor is very secure and I don't think it would have moved.

Do you think this motor is bad/or dying? Its a 50:1 crab pot pulling motor, I would expect it to have lots of power and life since I just bought it brand new a few months back.

    Thanks in advance.
    Nick

Also, I already tried increasing the PWMmin and increasing and decreasing the PWMmax but it didn't change the behaivor

It may be the case you need to pull the motor apart, check the brushes and windings for any sign of damage.

Ok @noorbeast I can give that a try this evening. I did take a video this morning to give a better idea of the problem incase there is some way I can avoid having to take the motor apart.

If you want to take a quick look:

I cant imagine how it could have gotten damaged because I dont have a very large range set for it to move, and its not supporting all that much weight. The cockpit is balanced, and I am only 160 lbs. Maybe its just a faulty motor, which would be a real drag.

I took apart the motor, I don’t know much about motors but it doesn’t look like anything is obviously wrong.

The motor does seem OK, you could lightly clean where the brushes run, but there are no obvious arc marks.

Check voltage of the controller and motors under load.

Hey @noorbeast, so before checking the voltage, I decided to switch over the pot and motor controller from the working motor to this problem one. And it looks to me like the issue is with the IBT controller! Now it seems back to is usual full power. If that is true its a relief because those are very cheap compared to these motors.
I will order a couple more and try switching them out.
Does that seem like the case to you as well?

If it is the IBT2, which seems likely, check all wiring and solder joints plus chips for signs of damage, as there is nothing worse than an intermittent fault.

The boards are cheap enough to warrant having spares on hand.

good call, i think I am going to take all this apart and rewire everything because my steel version of the platform is coming along so might be a sign to start transisting over to the new rig. I also just ordered 2 new IBT2 :)
Thanks for all the input @noorbeast
