With the pending release of Elite Dangerous 2.2.03 you can get enhanced audio experience whilst using headphones, with an improved sense of spatial 3D and surround sound, though it is not intended for speaker systems: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/315617-DTS-Headphone-X-support-in-2-2-03

You can currently test it out with ED 2.2.03 Beta3, but keep in mind Betas are a work in progress.

To enable the enhanced headphone spatial audio:

Set Windows to Stereo in your Sound settings of your Control Panel
    Open the start menu
Type “sound” and select the Sound setting that appears
    Find your active device
Click Configure to open the device settings
    Ensure you have Stereo selected

Start Elite Dangerous - and make sure you’ve updated to 2.2.03
Go to your Audio Options and Enable DTS Headphone:X
Enjoy Surround Sound audio on your regular headphones

Will this audio configuration be better than running a 5.1/7.1 soundcard?

It is specifically for headphones, not speakers, and will likely be most impressive in VR where spacial audio really comes into its own.

I was referring to headphones. I have sennheisser 363Ds and use the software 7.1 Dolby feature. Sounds really good already. I'll have to compare them.
