Perhaps so, and perhaps we are commenting at cross purposes, so just for the sake of clarity when Pimax testers talk about "Normal FOV" that is the software induced reduction to around 150 degrees, not 170 degrees.

As far as I know the actual PPD and FOV of the Pimax in not accurately known, only guessed at.

There is speculation about the new Pimax 5K+ screens being slightly smaller than the original 5K, giving a PPD increase because of likely wasted screen space, but I am not aware that has actually been confirmed as it is based on the supposition that the Pimax CEO made no mention of the new panels being higher resolution.

Interesting public comments at 19m 36s from a tester about concerned pricing discussions with Pimax:

    Latest Pimax backer update:

    Shipping has started.

    Hi Futurists,

We start to ship the first batch of Pimax 8K and 5K+ headsets!

Even though there will be the national holiday the first week of October, we will move on to ship all the devices for #1 - #100 backers during the holiday.

Our support team has collected responses from #1 - #100 backers. There are 48% 8K and 52% 5K+ in the first batch shipping.

Some of the early 100 backers haven't replied yet, we can reserve your units for another month. You are free to skip the first batch and let us know when you are ready. However, whether or not you want to receive your package in the first batch, please do reply the email from support@pimaxvr.com, so we have an idea about your plan.

We would highly suggest you upgrade your graphics cards if you don't have GTX1080 or above. If you have any question about graphics cards, please reach out to the support team, we can recommend and even help you to get the best graphics cards based on your using scenario.

As early backers, you will receive the headsets before anyone else in the world, but as we are still improving software and UX, you also need to prepare for more tweaks than other backers and general customers in the near future.

The team will provide one to one support for early backers. When you have received the headsets, please share your forum ID with the support team (email: support@pimaxvr.com), we will add you to a forum group specific for early backers: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/c/early-backers

We can get in touch via email, cell, Skype, and the forums to provide as much support as we could, even some free games ;)

Worth to mention that if you are very critical about UX design, we would suggest you wait and receive later batches when UX improved.

With very limited resources, the team has resolved the bottlenecks of the big FOV headsets, the next priority is to deliver better user experience. As time goes by, the comfort and the whole user experience will be largely improved with new software versions and accessories.

The team is eager to learn from your experience to improve the product, the other enthusiasts are waiting for your comments and knowledge about the devices to better use the headsets.

VR is one of the most subjective experiences, we cannot bring the demo units to all the backers, but our testers have accumulated over 30-hour reviews, AMA, and game playing videos on youtube for you.

Backers - you will be the first group of explorers to experience truly immersive VR. No matter which model you pick, either 5K+ or 8K, we will provide you special offers when new versions become available.

    Best Regards,

    The Pimax Team

Another video why the 5K is just better then the 8K. Reminds me of when you run a monitor at it's native resolution - it always looks better/clearer.

I think there is a future for 8K - but only with the X.

Interesting claim at 29:10 in the video, Pimax 5k+ colors will be adjusted to match the warmer 8k, as this has been one of the significant differences between the HMDs.

The limitations of trying to brute force the wide FOV Pimax are evident in this video review of the 1080ti vs 2080ti, the outcome being that there was not enough of a significant gain in 50% of the games tried to justify the cost of the 2080ti, and that was at the 'normal' rather than the full wide FOV of the Pimax:

Okay. I can get a GTX1080ti now, and that is what I will do. Buying a RTX2080ti would be a pricy caprice that would not serve me well. Like @noorbeast said, it is not even at the full pimax resolution. RTX is not yet the way to go... Well, not for me.

Here is a 'real world' review - make sure you have CC on. He although said that he was running the Beta version of Steam VR which is know to have issues.

I got mine the 27th of November (#1229). I kept the 8k. Some have received it after 6 weeks. I may not receive it in 2018, but who knows.

Backer #198 receive his Pimax, and my friend who is backer #98 is still waiting for his tracking number. Let's be patient.

Do we have any other choice...So only a couple of hundred backers have received headsets, but they expect to ship out Pre-orders and general sales in approximately 50 and 80 days respectively. They although have many thousands of backers still to send headsets to and they also need to sort out base stations/trackers etc. I wish they would be more transparent in what is going on. If I was Backer #98 I would not be very happy...

You're right, not much of a choice. This is why I try not to stress about it. People are actually receiving working units. So, this is good news. And my rig is making (slow) improvement as well. I may get a simulator and a Pimax in some weeks (years). It is enough to make me happy... Happier.

While you still wait you could also make PC improvements if necessary, the "8"k (and the 4K as well) needs a lot of computing power. Even a "former" top model GTX 1080 TI will run into performance trouble, hopefully you and many other bakers out there will not be disappointed by this.

Yep, I went for the 5K+ for this exact reason and from most if not all the reviews I have seen, there seems little to no improvement in the 8k due likely to the upscaler limitations. Recently Updating my CPU also helped my 1080TI work to it's potential.

Same, changed mine to the 5k, while the colors are slightly better on the 8k it is not as sharp as the 5k, except for distant small objects, with the 8k upscaler needing even more GPU brute forcing.

I do wish Pimax would implement the new SteamVR reprojection, because as far as I can tell there has been nothing shown of BrainWarp.

I kept the 8k, updated to the GTX 1080ti and I wait for the boxing day to look at new cpu (my I5 probably won't do it). But new CPU need new mother board. It can cascade to a new computer. I need to calm down and start to make choices. I already decided that the RTX were not enough bang for the bucks, and I settle down to the GTX. Let's keep the money for the 6dof rig.

A person in rF2 community received his 8k headset (he's early backer and in Asia). So, device exists, not only on paper :) He told me very, very positive things about how device performs in rF2, even using today's hardware.

So, I am about to put a pre-order. I am leaning towards 5k+, because:
    - I don't care much about resolution, I mostly need high FOV
    - I do not want pay money for hardware upscaling
    - I am not worried about black levels much as my use is for racing, and even in night racing there's some lighting in scene, so pitch black is not that important.

I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about which flavor of headset you'd recommend and why?

Also, I hear for racing one Vive base is enough. I cannot see V2.0 of base out anywhere, are they out?

    Cheers!
