I gave up on flight sim a few years ago because I did not find it immersive enough but after recently enjoying a VR setup, even with an extremely primitive flight sim, I want to return (that and the latest from MS 2020 or the most recent X-Plane with enormously rich graphics).

I have made my own "HOTAS" in the past but did not realise that it was possible for the DIYer to extract information from the sims to power a motion platform and I think I would like to give this a try. I'm not ambitious and would settle for something that gives some sensation of climb/descend and bank (2DoF ?) so I'm not terribly impressive.

I have some ideas on the motion platform hardware - which needs to be reasonably compact as I don't have a lot of space - and have enough metalworking skill to make something robust and not too heavy. I also have some ability with controllers (Arduino) and servos though this is where I will need to do the most reading.

My first priority is to complete the very high spec PC required to run the latest flight sims in VR. I am building an external case for it as I loathe the Gaming PC cases that have clearly been designed by a 12 year old to look as "cool" as possible (I am an old git and want something that is effective as a case but unobtrusive). I'm also waiting for the crypto currency bubble to deflate a bit more so that Graphics processors come down in price somewhat. Next will be the HOTAS that I hope to incorporate into a static platform that can be later be adapted to take servos for motion control.

Errr... thats about it for the moment. I'm hoping I can make at least some posts re: progress over the coming months (years!).

    Many thanks

You have come to the right place, the community here is very active, creative and knowledgeable.

You will find plenty of helpful information in the FAQs to get you started, in particular check out the SimTools, fundamentals of motion and the design sections: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

You can also search for specific types of projects/information using the Google Custom Search function on the Recent page: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/find-new/posts?recent=1

If something sounds odd then look it up in the glossary: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/glossary-of-acronyms-and-names.66/

Good luck with your flight sim project.

Thanks. I hope I'm not too dull or disappointing for other users and actually come up with "the goods" at some point.

    Cheers
