    Hello All!

    (please correct me if I'm posting in the wrong area) I'm working to build a 4DOF motion simulator. I have a budget of $3k and looking to experiment a little. I've built some 2DOF systems using linear actuators and would like to make a system like, Play simulator's:

    but add add another degree by adding a rotating plate driven by a motor with a wheel in the base.

    I was thinking of using 3 phase motors or steppers but wasn't quite sure. Does anyone have some advice of where I can start. I've never used 3 phase motors before but heard they are the best for efficiency (I'd like the rig to be powered by a single US outlet -120VAC ~20A). I'm fine with not using them as well - I'm open to anything! :)

    I'm still debating to generate motion from just some lever arms off of the geared output or make a linear actuator from scratch.

    I've done some calculations in the past on building a linear actuator but would this seem like a reasonable source? http://www.machinedesign.com/motorsdrives/how-pick-motors-linear-motion

    I've been in a $60k system before that used some beefy steppers and some gearing to make a custom linear actuator so everything could be powered by 120 VAC

    Thanks for the information @noorbeast ! I pm'd SeatTime for some information on how he did some calculations for his carbon fiber actuators. You might be able to help me with this though. If he used 350W motors, as long as the combined wattage of the motors is less than 2,400W (120VAC @ 20amp outlet) the system should be capable of running? I'm thinking like 3 actuators like seattime made for pitch, roll and heave and then a forth one to drive a wheel under the rig to power the yaw.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong! Thanks!

    I know @SeatTime did a lot of testing but I don't know what was the max capacity of his actuators.

    I purchased quite a few different motors that were local available to me and then did some testing to see what worked best with my intended design - there are just so many variables and you cannot believe what is written in motor specification now days as most come from countries were they don't seem to care about real specifications. Like my motors are rated at 48 amps but are also 350 Watts - it's printed on the side of the motor :rolleyes:. so which one is right? Enough said. There is plenty of info on this site nowadays, including detailed plans and material/costs for building DIY actuators.
