I used 1 layer of 1oz mat and another layer 1 1/2 oz mat, 3 gallons resin ,ended up being very strong and not to heavy about 75 lbs with the frame. I gelcoated the inside with Dolphin grey backgel waxed. Do not use white, Grey is needed as light bounces around like crazy in a sphere. cost was around $350.00 all said and done.
I am using a Benq w1070 projector and a 18" 1/4 dome mirror , still trying to source a first surface one without spending $1000.00 for one Yikes!
The great thing with this set up is I had to use immersive display with the 3 projectors for screen correction on surround vision, but nothing with this. I did need a second regular lcd monitor to see the very top corners for the buttons that are not visible in the dome. But otherwise it is great especially in 3D. I dont know Why some pictures are sideways ? 20150828_161122.jpgresize.jpg 20150906_155241.jpgresize.jpg 20150921_172634.jpgresize.jpg 20150925_170522.jpgresize.jpg 20151125_160439.jpgresize.jpg 20151125_173655.jpgresize.jpg 20151119_112408.jpg 20151125_174027.jpg

    Congrats!! very nice setup bravo.gif

I've heavily investigated on Paul Pourke dome projection with sperical mirror which is indeed quite cheap
    - screen
    - software
    - sourcing for mirrors
    and I write this tutorial : http://www.racingfr.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=49225

but I need to move from my house before starting the build :)

I went to the same conclusion as you: using a giant balloon to build the dome. But I have no experience, so your feedback is very welcome! :)

    - Can you share the supplier of the balloon and its cost, please?
    - Can you tell us why is your head so far behind and not at the center of the dome?

    yours
    Mat

Racing mat: yes it is a room hog! But you do cut off about 20" or so off the bottom so I could of built it @8ft (2.5 M)wide , but it fit- Barely . As you can see its close to my ceiling on top of the simulator.
I looked at Paul Bourkes several years ago as well, Our natural vision is a circle so I tried with coreplast and made a very poor dome but it gave me the feel I wanted of really being immersed far better than just a square view. The edges are out of focus in the dome, this cannot be corrected since the projection that is in focus is on the center of the mirror, the corners are a longer reach so out of focus, but our clear infocus view is only 4 degrees any way.
I looked at your tutorial and your right on the money there. The only thing like I mentioned, because I have the mirror placed where I do, I do not need any screen correction software running. Immersive view is over a $100 that you don't have to spend.
Paul Bourke placed the mirror on the floor, yes its out of view but you still have sit on something and or a dashboard for you steering wheel or what ever, place the mirror as close to the center of the screen ( height) as possible makes a perfect straight image no distortion.
(Just a side note, I tried with rear projection & curved screen and hot spotting is almost impossible to get rid of and very out of focus edges.)

The ball I bought from Beachballs.com $78.00USD 7-FT Signature SE Solid Blue Beach Ball , I just went to their website I cant find the ball I bought- mmm maybe they only bring so many in? Since its pvc the polyester doesn't attack it. But I put a layer of release wax on and the balloon fell off as soon as I deflated it. So I still have a giant beachball kids love it LOL.

Sitting position: As you can see I have a 1966 172 Cessna airplane that was bent so I got it for $100 , cut the back end off , well if I didn't have that I would definitely sit further in the dome. So I am kind of stuck where it is because I cant move the mirror in the fuselage. Moving the fuse in closer to the dome the Image gets smaller, I am covering the whole area of the mirror now and I tried a 24" quarter dome mirror and it doesn't work . The 18 "mirror is the best size. I do cover the cockpit with a curtain so you don't see the floor, it all helps to make my wife sick on the No limits coaster in 3d and Simtools, its fantastic!
I played a little COD in 3d before I mounted it on the sim and sitting on the floor a few feet away from the dome playing a FPS game well very good! I commented on a member who wanted to make a motorcycle sim, so with a dome screen place the front wheel of the bike ,Projector and mirror right at the edge of the dome on the front forks would be really immersive.

I will do a youtube video soon with more detail ..

    Thanks! @iamcanadian2

One more question: is your mat 1oz per squarefeet (or yd²) ?

    1 oz/sq.ft = 300 g/m²
    1 1/2 oz/sq.ft = 450 g/m²
