Hi all. I've had an Arduino and a 6DOF Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sitting on the side for some time with no real purpose. Recently, my son got a popular space adventure/combat game (which bought back memories of time spent as a teenager playing on the original version in the 80's). Anyway, my boy's not into the maker/hacker scene, but I've always enjoyed a little tinker with bits and pieces. Unfortunately, I generally lose interest before any real 'creation'. However, seeing my son play, I set him up an external dash board using Roccat Power Grid. Very quick and simple. Now though, I'm up for a challenge with my Arduino and IMU - motion platform, here I come - with a bit of support from you guys ;)

    Hi Col99, welcome to XSimulator.net

There is no need for an IMU, it measures position and translates it to the computer. A motion platform would go the other way; from the computer to the platform. For this all you need as far as electronics go is the Arduino and motor driver boards or, a simpler method; JRK 12v12 controller boards.

Surf the site and look at other 6DoF projects to get an idea of what is involved and then post a build thread on what you want to do and ask questions. Many friendly people here would love to help.

Hi! Newbie here. I have no experience with electronics, programming, welding nor carpentry. But damn I'm gonna make this dream project a reality.

Hello! Another brand-new member here, just saying hi!

I was just about to plop down a good amount of money on a stationary sim seat, but decided to search for "best sim seat for flight and racing" once more before clicking "Place Order" on what I had chosen, and then I stumbled onto and became fascinated with SilentChill's build page. After browsing through your site for a bit, I have decided to take a swing at building a motion sim now instead. I am a PC guy - have been involved with computers since the 80s, and have always had the VR itch. Though I'm "grown-up" in my 40s now, my wallet remains a sieve when it comes to itching that itch... I have a Rift DK1 & DK2, and now a CR on order (as well as a Virtuix Omni coming for walking sims - lol!). So, I was preparing to buy a seat that would work for both Flight & Racing so I could really live my fantasies once the CR Rift arrives in a couple months... Now I know though that my true fantasies must involve a motion sim, even if it takes longer than that for me to build!

I'm a total noob when it comes to building a rig like the ones I've been drooling over here, but feel OK with soldering having built RC quad-copters in the past, and feel confident about being able to read and learn here. Welding is something I've been wanting to learn anyway. Your site is a true treasure chest, as you undoubtedly know, and I am thrilled to have found it. I look forward to more conversations in the future.

Now on to learning more about what the big boys are playing with..!

    Welcome @jademan.

Being a 'total noob' is fine, many members here started out with no knowledge and very limited skill sets and have still successfully built their own motion simulator with the support of the very active community and information found here.

Have a good look through the FAQs for really useful build related information: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/

Hello everyone my name is Emily, I'm new here, duh. Anyways I interested in building a 6dof Stewart platform. I will be pairing it with VR headset and use it for flight sim, elite dangerous, driving sims, etc. I have very little electronic experience, some programming experience but I'm pretty good a building stuff.

This being said I find a motion simulator somewhat intimidating. Not because I don't think I can do it but because I have no clue where to start. What motors, what gear ratio, AC or DC, what controllers, fast motion or more motion, and several other unknowns.

My original intention was to purchase a ckas platform. But it is way outside my budget. Also I live in an arartment and only have 120v outlets available for power. I'm able to spend about 3k or so. Everyone here has lots of great info and I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on but I find all the options very overwhelming and have no idea where to start. Any advice?

Also my one modification to many of the designs I have seen is to lower the seat relative to the arm attachment points on the cockpit. The idea being to move the center of rotation of the platform closer to the center gravity of the rider.

    Thank everyone.

In particular have a look at the existing 6DOF projects listed in the FAQs for some inspiration: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/list-of-6dof-projects.179/

Do a lot of research and planning, as a 6DOF is a complex and possibly expensive first project.

    Good luck with your project.

Wow! So many new members. Awesome! Couple of Aussies in the fold as well.

    Welcome!

You will either fall by the wayside, never to realise the dream of a motion sim,
    or
become so addicted to Motion Sims, that checking this forum becomes a daily routine!

I hope you all choose the latter. :thumbs

@Alita588 - Sadly, It's how forums go. Some people arrive full of ideas, open a thread, never to be seen again.

Most (thankfully) do get a sim going :)

Ask questions... lots of them. Everyone here is so willing to assist. Never known an online community like it! :grin

Can't argue with you your completely right.

I do have many questions but slowly getting the answers. I'm planing on doing a 6dof motion simulator. I already have PC and controllers. I have a fairly limited budget (<$3k) and power (120v 15amp) at my apartment so will have to stick to low power solutions. I do have one major question that being how important is speed of motion vs distance of travel? I'm making a system for flight and racing sims. I read a couple posts but it seamed to be a flame war. And one more question is how important is it to have the riders CG aligned with the point of rotation?

@Alita588 - As @noorbeast advises, please open your own thread and members will gladly assist you there.

Same advice goes for all members - It helps to keep things local to your build and ends up being great resource to look back upon.
Replies here will get lost as new members join :)

Good luck - and I hope I can assist everyone in some small way along the way.

    Welcome @bierzor6.

When you are ready please start your own project thread here and add some more details, pictures and if possible a video of your 2DOF, I and others would be very interested in finding out more: http://www.xsimulator.net/community/forums/diy-motion-simulator-projects.22/

By all means post in your native language, but please do also include an English translation via Google Translate. It saves other members time trying to work out who may need help and who is just posting a comment.

We have bi-lingual speakers from many different language group so if Google Translate really messes it up they can help clarify what was intended.

Hi! I'm from Monterrey, Mexico. I've been driving racing simulators for over twenty years and I´ve been planning for a while to build a simple cockpit to have a better racing experience, but then I decided to go for the whole package and make it with motion too.
Since i don´t have a lot of spare time I'm not sure how long this is gonna take, but I'll keep you posted of any progress. At the same time, thanks in advance to everybody posting here, cause I'm sure it'll be very helpful to me. Greetings from Mexico!
