2DOF - JRK / Winch - Build Thread

    A small update showing a potential placement for the motors. The first image shows a plumb bob hanging from the upper mounting location with the frame parallel to the floor. I started with the motor arm axis of rotation directly in line with that mark, but that seemed to limit some freedom of movement of the frame at large angles. I actually went quite a bit forward of this to get what I thought was the best (at least better) range of motion. Here are the initial resultant angular travels with a lever arm of approximately 10" (That's 254mm or +6 times more than the recommended arm length; should I mention here I still really don't know if this will work o_O ) A video is at the end
    • Pitch Up : 24.95 deg.
    • Pitch Dn : 23.15 deg.
    • Roll L : 22.85 deg.
    • Roll R : 23.90 deg

    WhooHoo!! It finally moves!! :D:D:D

    So far about 4-5 hrs total running (setting up JRK's, AC profiles, DCS profiles). Everything so far has been with me off to the side watching closely for malfunctions since I'm using nearly full travel of what my system is capable of (in other words, if either Axis goes out of range bad things will happen to the mechanical pieces :) ).

    With heat sinks on the JRK's its about +10 degrees F above ambient during testing (No fan on yet and no weight other than empty frame on top).

    From memory basic JRK configuration is : P=0.39 / I = 0.0 / D = 0.5 , Integral limit 2000, no acceleration or current limits. Only problem I had was when I reset the 'Learn' limits and somehow screwed up 'Detect Motor Direction' after that. For an hour I seriously could not figure out why the motor arms would accelerate as they approached the min and max limits :eek:. I have at least +50 successful uses on the Emergency Stop Switch which works perfect. One power supply controls the two 40Amp relays wired in parallel to turn the JRK's on/off. I'll let the other power supply run the fan(s).

    Profiles are currently 20% to 40% per DOF (pitch,roll,surge,sway,heave). So that means about 100% to 140% in total for what I tried so far (Again, all done sitting off to the side watching). I can see the tuning center will keep me busy for a while. I noticed that my power supplies would shut down when some of the in-game axis would go crazy back and forth at high frequency. To fix this I added 25% 'Smoothing' to the DOF and this Dampened the erratic behavior observed in Virtual Axis.

    That's about it for now. Before I get on the frame I still need to do a few things: Final Solder on the Pots, Solder JRK boards for AUX pin, A little more bracing on the upper frame for strength, a little more welding on the lower frame motor mounts to take the load. Thanks for looking

    Good feedback. Thank you noorbeast. I did start with Integral limit of 10,000 but changed it to 2,000 when I encountered the problem I mentioned with motors running away. Turned out to be my fault but I thought at the time it could have been integral wind-up. I will try changing it back.

    Yes, lowering the Main setting prevented the shut down. Between 50% to about 80% no issue - but wouldn't take 100% without smoothing added. I will back it off and work it back in progressively as I go.

    Unfortunately adding smoothing is masking the actual problems and interferes with developing a well refined motion profile, when used other than as intended.

    Start with refining the JRK settings following @bsft's guide, particularly with PID and motor settings.

    Needing Main Settings below 90% indicates some significant issues, best to resolve those before spending time on trying to refine a motion profile.

    Merry Christmas! Everything is up and running now. Here she is in primer grey :)

    Most of my time has been spent tuning DCS and with Oculus - Just amazing and can't wait for the next generation VR sets. I have to tell you guys, it feels incredible to light the afterburner on the DCS Mig-21 (surge set at 60% of 33 degrees) to be pushed back in the seat and then pull back in a high speed climb. You can see the seat belt system there which helps, plus it's cool just to strap it on before a flight :D

    What's amazing to me is that the JRK's do not get much over ambient, even with me out of balance to the rear. I was really worried about that initially with all of the travel I wanted, but these guys are running cool as can be.

    That's great. I'd love to have a dedicated flight sim like that as well.
    I like the concept and the range of movement. I think a curved widescreen like BenQ XR3501 mounted a bit closer would be really nice on this rig as well.
