Hi there. Just curious , at my local Kmart , they have projectors and 84" screens for $299. As its for sim use it would not get used that much for me.
Question is , my intention would be to curve the screen a bit. Apart from not curving too much , is there a point where it can be curved so as I would not need 2 projectors?
    Cheers

There is software that lets you projection map to any surface space. It is more a question of appropriate positioning and resolution.

A couple of years ago I used 2 powerful projectors to 3D Projection map a while skatepark to turn it into an interactive performance surface for youth performers. The challenge is that all projectors have a limited focal range which must suit what you are doing. Cheaper projectors also tend to have lower resolution. I use an ultra short throw projector with my sim, but that is to compliment the Rift. I would go for a higher end projector if it was my only display.

Lower resolution not a problem, its amazing how good 1024 x 768 can look with some in game graphics settings.
I am not looking for software, I am asking opinions about curve in screen as its only one projector.
From bits and pieces I have read, a curve is possible, just a matter of field of view range as well.
Spec say it projects up to 84" , which is heaps more than I am planning. I am probably looking at 55"-60" wide with a slight curve in the screen.
Playing with motion makes any resolution changes almost negligible I found. My vision is being shaken anyway.
Ok, I have layby it anyway and will get it in a few weeks, set it up and give it a run.

@bsft you cannot use curved screens using projectors w/o additional software as @noorbeast has tried to explain.
As far as you probably know I am using triple screens but they are not curved because the software would unsharp the picture quality. If you would use 4k resolutions then this issue can be neglected. Anyway I play with 1280x720 (3720x720), 1024x768 is too low IMO because if you would like to use big screens you can see every pixel.

Ok, thanks @Pit and @noorbeast , I appreciate the help, I will hunt up some software later after I get set up.
I will see what sort of resolution I car run once I am going, not for a few weeks.

    Cheers.

    Q. Apart from not curving too much , is there a point where it can be curved so as I would not need 2 projectors?

    A. You can curve it to as much as 120-150 degrees but not sure about how much destortion there would be even with corrective software.

A few yrs back I tried a short throw low res projector and the screen door affect was too noticable for me. I projected it on white metal coil used for trimming exterior homes that I had. I think I used a 2ft x 5ft piece and temporally curved it around to my liking. It was all an experimental set up to see what was involved.

It definitely gave me more of a feeling of being in a car but there's only so much a single camera can produce as far as total width res. It's not the same as what triples can produce.

Ultimately the screen door affect was the main reason I put it on the back burner plus what a good 1080p projector and bulb replacement costs. It was all more than what I wanted to invest at that time.

So experiment and have some fun!

Sounds like an interesting idea. At first I'm not mounting any screen or projector on my sim.

I want to just use my normal TV for starters which is too big to fit on the sim and then I want to evolve to just using the HTC Vive but a short throw projector might be a good mid way point.

@soraz , thanks for the info, but as @Pit mentioned, I am NOT going to spend that much on a projector. My entire sim costs less than that.
@Hobbs77 , I dont plan to curve it much , maybe similar to a curved TV or monitor. It projects 84" , and I am going to use about 55-65" of that amount. So a curved TV is stuff all curve.
I do recall I can tweak the graphics cfg file of some games to force various custom res, including 3 screen width onto one scree.
Its cheap and I am sure I can get it to work as a start. I dont expect much from $299, however, I have done some good images with cheap stuff.
If anyone does know of any "curve projector image software" , (I will do a search once I am closer to set up though), Id appreciate any links. EDIT Surfacemap software, copy, I will look into that.
    Cheers.
