Steam is taking a different approach to dev kit allocation to the Oculus Rift, which has made the Rift dev HMDs available to purchase. Steam will give away its Vive dev kits for free to a selected number of designated developers.

Vive Dev kit signups opened today: http://steamcommunity.com/steamvr

    I got nothing.

I didn't really expect to score a dev rig but thought they would have some sort of auto notification that said something like 'thanks for your interest but unfortunately at this stage demand has outstripped supply of Vive dev kits, but we do look forward to you progressing your VR project when the commercial Vive is released'. It really is not hard to be courteous to the dev community.

It's official, the Vive release will be delayed until April 2016 :( http://blog.htc.com/2015/12/htc-vive-update/

The upside is that a further 7000 dev kits are to be released in the new year, so there is still hope that one of us that have put in for one may get lucky.

So it looks like the Rift will be the first consumer grade VR HMD to market, sometime in the Q1 2016.

It is really hard to guess what the market may be and what losing first mover advantage means for the Vive.

The Rift is likely to have good gamer support, the Vive is likely to still be of interest to developers because of the more open approach.

If the recent release of GearVR is any indication it could still be pretty hard to lay your hands on either the Rift or Vive when they are first released, particularly in places like Australia where GearVR is still listed as 'Coming Soon'.

I ordered my GearVR via a proxy and it has shipped, so I guess I am likely to do the same with the Rift and Vive, as at this stage I still plan to get both of them.

This news comes as no suprise at all. It was always going to be delayed.

Gotta get on the Rift Hype train now !! :D

It's the same story with all of these. When the rift first started appearing people thought it would be released in the summer of 2014, then people assumed the start of 2015. Now I think they've decided to stop guessing.

People seem to be getting very annoyed about the Vive not being released before xmas. I think if they release in April next year it'll be a hell of an achievement.

    No more sign ups https://steamcommunity.com/steamvr/signup

They'll keep on sending dev kits maybe to the ones whom already signed (finger crossed)

EDIT: "New Sign-ups are now closed but we will continue to ship HTC Vive Developer Editions to new developers through summer and fall."

HTC has got plenty of flak for leaving the Vive delay launch announcement to the very moment when people expected the Vive to go on sale.

HTC has now amended its original announcement for the April 2016 release of the Vive to now include a statement that pre-orders will open at the end of February 2016: http://uploadvr.com/htc-vive-preorders-start-february/

Oculus has stepped up the pressure even further announcing that Eve Valkyrie will be bundled with the Rift when it is launched: https://twitter.com/oculus/status/674983291527671808

I hope it doesn't turn into the usual nonsense of having fanboys arguing over which is better but we know that's exactly what it'll turn into.
I'm going to leave it for the reviews (or the tech nerd guy beside me at work who will be buying both). Anything I've read so far from people who have tested both, that all have favoured the experience of the Vive.

I plan to get both, but then VR is my thing. The fanboyz have been at it ever since the Vive was announce, and that will likely only intensify in the short term!
