I like to tinker with phidgets from time to time and I just realized that they released some new boards that may make connecting Large AC motors to x-sim a breeze.

I would think a plug-in could be coded if needed.

Anyway, maybe sirnoname and others would take a look.

The Velleman VM110/K8055 will give you similar functionality and more channels for a cheaper price.
Unfortunately the positioning loop still has to be in software with the encoder option too.

There is no such thing as perfect. :)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the Velleman VM110/K8055 have 2 analog inputs & outputs with a maximum of 8 bits of resolution?

Where the “PhidgetAnalog 4-Output” has 4 analog outputs with 12bits of resolution?

Oops, you're right! I thought it has more channels.

You could use the output board to control 4 motors with the encoder board to read their position.

Thanks for your replies Frakk!

Seems like a great setup for under 200$ USD.
Good Speed and Resolution with the ability to control 4 AC drives / Motors.

So what would we need to connect the boards to X-Sim is the question?

Looking further into the Velleman VM110/K8055, I believe the PWM signal would still need to be converted to be able to control AC drives.

Like the one tronicgr designed here:

This is what I was thinking for one axis of a powerful AC system.

    About ~400 USD an axis
About the cost of a scn5/6 with a ton more power leading to much bigger x-sim systems.
I just don’t know how to control them?
Is there any off-the-shelf AC motor controllers currently available to x-sim?

I don't know if there is anything that is perfect. I work for a company that produces custom build-ups. A custom build up would be a lot closer to perfect for most applications. You can check out us out at http://www.EMCSolutions.com. If your just looking for a VFD though and not an entire build-up, I'd recommend http://www.VFDs.com. They have a pretty good inventory and are willing to help you get the drive that will work best for you.
