Question 3DOF vs 4DOF for VR Motion Racing – Worth the 4th Motor?

    My Motion Simulator:
    3DOF
    Hello Simulators!!

I’m in the design phase of a full-frame VR motion racing simulator. I originally planned 2DOF, then moved to 3DOF (heave triangle), and now that I’m modeling everything, I’m realizing it wouldn’t be a huge leap to go full 4-post / 4DOF. See Pictures)

    So here’s the debate:
For VR motion racing (F1 / ACC style), is adding the 4th motor truly worth it?

Would I only be gaining stability and finer control…
or is there anything I’d actually be losing (simplicity, tuning ease, responsiveness, VR comfort, etc.) by going 4DOF?

Also — if moving from 3 to 4 motors, can individual motor size be reduced slightly since the load is shared? Or do most of you still recommend keeping the same motor spec per corner?

For those who’ve built or tuned both:
    • Does 4DOF feel noticeably better in VR?

    • Is it harder to tune properly?

    • Is the added cost and complexity justified for racing?
Trying to decide whether to lock in 3DOF or take the step to 4 while I still can.

    Appreciate any real-world feedback.
    THANKS!!

I would say typically four motors means lead screws and linear actuators. Three motors means lever arms.

Four motors gives you pure pitch and roll. You don’t get that with three motors.

Pitch and Roll he will even have with only 2motors

And 4 Actuators have the same result like 3 Actuators, 3DOF! Pitch, Roll, Heave.

It completely depends on your Rig and which Parts you want to use. You want to use linear actuators or rotary actuators?
