So I finally got my 6 DOF built and thought the hardest part was behind me, but now it seems like my ancient Rift CV1 is acting up on me. I currently have my rig set up in my basement, which is directly below my office where my computer is. I put some passthrough connectors in the wall to get my cables up to my computer, but it seems like the Rift is really hit and miss about whether it wants to work with them or not. The extensions can't be more than 3-4 feet and for a while it seemed like everything was working fine. I just got a new yoke and throttle control for my birthday and was hoping to try it out with my setup, but my Rift is just giving me fits and keeps blinking on and off and occasionally showing a full static screen for a few seconds, then not even showing anything at all. It's still powered and the presence indicator still functions and makes it seem like it's working, but I'm not getting a display. I might try moving my whole PC downstairs and just having the remote setup in my office instead, but I'm also curious with all the development and stuff that has gone on with VR headsets, what do people like the most for sim games and what works the best with 6 DOF motion rigs in particular?

If I'm going to upgrade, I'd kind of prefer to get away from having any kind of extra "remote" stuff I'd have to worry about, like lighthouses or cameras. But I'm also not sure if inside-out tracking is as well suited to motion rigs as outside in. With WMR going away, it also might limit the pool of stuff that makes sense to buy this late in the game. My dad has a Reverb G2 that used to be the main one people suggested for sim games, but it's future could be questionable, assuming no one steps up to find a way to keep it compatible into the future (not that I particularly want to upgrade to Windows 11, but someday I might not have a choice). Something like the Bigscreen Beyond is tempting from the quality and lightweight standpoint, but it's a bit pricey and I don't have the graphics card to utilize it effectively, so I hesitate to go that direction either. Granted, I think any modern headset out there would probably want more graphics card than I have (RTX 2060), though I seem to be less bothered by lowered quality graphics than most as I've never had a problem with my CV1 and the 2060 from a performance standpoint (maybe a sharpness one though).

So all that ranting aside, what are people using/suggesting for VR nowadays with a moderately large movement motion rig in mind? I'm not sure what my budget is, but it's certainly under $1000. I'd probably prefer even less than $500. I'd also really like a headset that is just a headset. I don't like jumping through all the stupid hoops you have to with the Oculus/Meta stuff. All I really want is a pair of monitors I strap to my face with as little between the game and them as I can get, if that's even possible.

With only an 2060 and this small budget, i would recommend an GPU Upgrade before everything else...

With a Motion Rig a lightweight VR Headset is recommendable, like the Bigscreen Beayond 2, but it has a higher price and your gpu will not do it.

I think the tough part for me is that it seems like any headset upgrade is probably going to need a GPU upgrade to go with it. My Rift actually works just fine with the 2060 for Assetto Corsa and MSFS, which are the only games I really play with it at the moment. I've been trying to get Mechwarrior 5 going as well, but have some issues with the telemetry output at the moment, so it's been a back burner thing. The VR part works, the telemetry values are just wildly out of scale or something.

I also just have a hard time dumping too much money on anything as I really don't play that much. I'm in a weird niche where I barely play any games, but the few I'd like to play would really benefit from a higher end GPU. I just don't like the idea of dropping $500+ on a headset and another $600+ on a GPU for something I may only use a few times a month.
