Introducing A-SIM: Airspeed SIMulator hardware peripheral

    I finished building a project i had long time in mind.

    It is called Airspeed SIMulator, (A-sim) and it is a serial-interface peripheral which reads airspeed and sideslip values from the game through X-SIM and simulates what the air would feel like in an open cockpit. To create the airflow, it uses 2x 12Vdc computer fans. In my case it outputs around 4.25 m2/minute (~150 QFM), which is quite a lot. I have used it for IL2 open-cockpit airplanes, but it can be used for racing simulators too.

    It is based on the PIC16F887, powered by 12Vdc, drives up to 4 PC fans(!) and its total cost is below 20 EUROS.
    With 4 PC fans one could get around 10 m3/min, you would need goggles to face the screen! :lol:

    (i used my PC's power supply to power A-sim, through the 12V line (yellow-black) )

    Here are the settings which were used in X-SIM:

    ~a02~: L_Slip L_Slip_settings.jpg, L_slip_math.jpg
    ~a03~: R_Slip R_Slip_settings.jpg, R_slip_math.jpg

    But i have long dreadlocks, so you might see them waving...(probably not because they are TOO heavy for this..)
    I am going to pick up a camera in about 2 hours, and i will post..

    Still looking for a way to make the airflow visible in the video.. :?

    You can tape long strings to the fan frames (simplest), or use a smoke machine (would be cool). :thbup:

    The best part of this project is the LEGO fan mounts! Yeah, go LEGO! :cheers:

    I really like your project, as i can recall someone else has done such a thing for racing.
    I want to add fans to my racesim and that xsim controls it, sadly because of my lack in electronics i cannot make it.
    If someone is willing to build something like this, i will pay for it, and some ;)

    I could build it for you! I can built it and ship it to you for 25 Euros. It would take me a week's time to ship..
    At this moment, it can control 2 channels of fans. How many fans do you think you will need at EACH side?
    If you are looking for more than 2, i can modify it a little bit to fit the task..

    I think i need one fan on every side, and put a hoses or something in front of it for more 'pressure'
    Maybe you can make an option for four fans, more wind the better hehe ;) Its mainly for race-sims.
