Compact Full frame, 2Dof with TL

    Question:

    Going to get the 160A Server Power Supply, What Size Amp hour battery should i pair to it?

    After talking with some collegues today we have come to the conclusion that:

    The battery will really only be utilized for regenerational spikes and other than that the power supply will be supplying the current overall so the battery size shouldnt need to be huge and the whole system will just sit at 12v, Is that correct?

    I would still need to put either a diode or have a cutoff so when the power supply shuts off the battery doesnt back feed the power supply correct?

    Last but not least, Should i put my relay to cut power, before the drivers or between the motors and drivers?

    Almost two whole years.......Well I'm Back! Motors are being delivered TODAY!!! Yesss

    Apologies for the hiatus, I hope everyone is well!

    Thanks to @Rodeo5150 for getting in touch about some power queries that kind of lit the fire under my butt to have a look to see if the motors were back in stock and lo and behold they were so i bought em!!


    Will start posting some updates and I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions to ask as we go along

    UPDATE TIME!!!!

    Massive shout-out to DMAX (@Halloween2go)

    I've changed direction a little bit and I'm now following along with his compact frame design as i think it is a great design and takes up far less room with minimal compromises compared to a normal shoulder mount style unit, Will keep you all posted on progress as i go along,

    So far i have tacked the base frame together, Tacked the traction loss frame together and mounted the pivot and the wheels, So far so good!!!

    Next step is cutting the two plates for the mid frame wheels to roll on and welding everything up!

    Ok so I've now welded out the base frame and the traction loss frame, added the plates for the wheel to roll on, I've also made my top frame and temporarily mounted the pivot, I'm pretty sure the pivot will need to moved rearward but we will see, I'm waiting for my seat to be delivered which is now holding me up!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

    I'm going to also adjust the angle of the 4 wheels as having them straight isn't really that great, They squeal a bit as they move because they are dragging as well as rolling so will fix that up, I'm also going to make the front pivot bolt-able and the seat Uni bolt-able as well, I really want to have this powder coated at the end so would like to be able to disassemble it as much as possible,

    Oh so far it looks like i have about 8 degrees of pitch and about the same roll angle, if i move the pivot back it will change a little but i think it will be fine especially in VR as the smallest moves i believe will feel massive, a few friends and myself have sat on the frame and closed our eyes and the Traction loss feels like you move alot!!!

    My seat finally arrived after being stuffed around for 2 months and cancelling my order i ended up purchasing a Bride lowmax fixed back (copy) from ebay for a good price,

    So i have started on the top the frame now and will hopefully have this completed later this week!!

    So today i picked up some 1/2" high tensile all thread as i couldn't get 100mm full thread bolts easily enough :(

    I welded the first nut on then cut the thread length to 100mm and then made another two, I used a lathe at work to center drill all of them to 5mm and then tapped them 6mm for the connection of the potentiometer's

    I then tapped all 3 motor hollow shafts to 1/2" (Can't use 12mm as it is too loose) and fitted the levers

    My levers are:

    Traction loss Overall length 190mm, C-C is 160mm But i will be punching more holes in at 20mm increments down the lever so i can adjust if needed

    Pitch/Roll overall 150mm, C-C is 120mm and again i will be punching holes in 20mm increments to find the best torque vs speed as i am using 25:1 gearboxes not the 50:1's like @Halloween2go so see how we go.....

    Also for anyone wondering the Motion dynamics 25:1 gearboxes have a Nylon main gear and can be reversed to allow the longer hollow shaft to be setup as a LHS and RHS rather than reverse the orientation

    Levers will have multiple holes punch in them today to find the optimum lever length for the design and because I'm using 25:1's (I will probably upgrade to 50:1 or 60:1 at a later date)

    Top frame is tacked up and everything is where i think it should go,

    Question time?????

    Can I mount the motors in board like the photo? And have short arms with roughly 55mm c2c levers?

    I think it should be ok, I've seen it on similar designs

    @noorbeast do you have any suggestions??

    You can mount the motors inboard, and your start CTC measurement seems sensible, but what you may want to consider is having the levers extend just outside the frame, so you maximise the roll angle as much as possible withing a compact area, see my rig as an example:

    Alright we have motion!! Thanks Everyone for your help and input!! i really appreciate it!!!

    Everything seems to react nicely in SMC3 will probably need to do a little refining,

    Downloaded Live for speed, ran and then patched it with Sim tools,

    I'm Stuck with Sim tools setup atm, in the axis assignments section it seems no matter what try i cannot get pitch to work?

    Also in the output testing its not very smooth movement following the slider it does an initial jerky movement as you start to slide it one way then does nothing until near the end and its quite violent when it moves there too

    Will play with it a bit more this afternoon when i get home

    But for now enjoy some pics and thanks again everyone!

    Hey @noorbeast Thanks for links they helped alot!! i was using the search tool, totally forgot about the faq section :( and thanks for your very helpful hints and tips along the way it really has helped me get this done!

    I've attached some photos of SMC3 and simtools for everyone too have a peek at, Not sure why motor 2 needs to be so different to motor 1 for tracking the graph as cleanly as possible maybe something is a little off somewhere,

    once i have this part sorted i still need to rip the whole thing apart and weld the top frame out, I'm also going to slightly angle the Tl wheels to follow the arc better (Noisy) then i will put it back together fit it all out again and make any adjustments i need to make, then rip it all apart again hahaha (for powder coating) then final fitout!! and start using it!!

    Have to have a massive shoutout to @Halloween2go without his new video's I probably wouldn't have had the motivation to get stuck into it and seeing your lower frame designs and being able to follow along building mine saved a bunch of headaches!! Mate your a bloody legend and your content is great! keep it up,

    A couple of suggestions for your consideration -

    While some differences in hardware can result in varied SMC3 settings, they would not likely be wildly different, so do investigate what is going on, as it will only complicate SimTools settings.

    Once that is sorted on the SimTools side don't use Filters until all other aspects of the motion profiled are refined.

    You really should configure surge, sway, roll, pitch and heave. But it is important to balance the total axis % allocation: https://www.xsimulator.net/community/faq/axis-assignment-percentage-totals.120/

    Hmm i cannot get it too respond to pitch and roll at all.................Nevermind turns out for whatever reason it automatically goes to the default preset in the output testing GRRRR
