Can motion be different on Steam or Oculus?

    I've been using HP reverb G2 headset and playing Dirt Rally 2.0 steam version. Recently I got Oculus Quest 2 so I tried it with Oculus version of Dirt Rally 2.0. Strangely, Oculus version seems have less motion then steam version with same plug-in and set up. I tried several times but I definitely feel less movement with Oculus version. Is it possible? or just my feeling?...

    If the game telemetry, plugin and settings are the same I would expect the same output, but different HMDs may also factor in, so to check you can run the Quest 2 via ALVR or Virtual Desktop utlising Steam, that way you can check if the Quest itself gives you a different perception of motion, as you are then comparing apples with apples.

    When you say you feel less motion when using the Quest, do you mean in your motion sim?

    If you mean less motion in what you see in the headset, this could happen because of the way the headsets track head motion. I wouldn’t expect the headset to have any effect at all on sim chair motion but how the headsets track their own motion could easily lead to differences in what you see.

    If you read up on how headsets track their own motion it is both optical using cameras (for these particular headsets) and using accelerometers to “feel” the head motions. The accelerometer readings are generally very fast and the cameras are slow so you get a camera fix and then multiple inertial readings, then a camera fix, etc. Any differences in the motion in what you see will come down to each headset’s tracking.

    Ideally the headsets accurately track head motion but there will be tracking errors in all to some extent, some lag, high frequencies will likely get damped out some, etc. Any differences between the headset tracking will probably be due to the hardware and how the software handles the data. It probably comes down to which version of head tracking you prefer. I suspect you seeing more motion in the Reverb is due to faster tracking that would have more fidelity but don’t know. I do know the Reverb tracking is really good. It’s what I run with now.

    I don’t have a good explanation for less motion in a motion sim if that’s what you mean. The sim shouldn’t care what you see or where you are looking. The only way I can see that happening is if something in the display drivers for the Quest is maybe loading your system more and maybe cutting into CPU time for the sim itself. You’d need to make sure your system is roughly equally loaded under both headsets to know if this even a possibility.

    Is there any motion compensation available with the oculus version of the game? Or are you not using motion compensation with the steam version too?
