What are the benefits of using a one-to-one (straight up connecting wheel shaft to encoder shaft)
or using a belt driven reduction?

Are you using a direct drive motor ?

There will be no backlash or slippage if you use the encoder direct

What about the encoder resolution change with gearing. If I'm using 1000ppr encoder and using 1:4 gearing will it affect the encoder output.

I assume you are not using a direct drive motor

My suggestion is to put the encoder on the wheel

But you could out it on the motor, is the connection a belt or a gear ?

If the connection is a belt you may get slip
