Hi all, Its been a while since I last dabbled in the sim hardware, you have all come a long way.

Looking through diy wheel setups and notice a lack of using cheap readily available hardware.
Has anyone run the numbers of the power columns because they can be had sub £100 and they are made for the job, easy mount of all parts just require electronics and mounting.

    cheers

I had asked about this in the past and got laughed at but it is still something I wish to look into one day. Some have integral controllers that output position, angle and rotational speed, as well as the ability to override the driver input thru overpowering torque - so as you say, all there and ready to go.

Just be wary that some MB/BMW/VAG ones (2015 onwards) have component protection built into them so unless they hear from the Immobilizer and Gateway modules they will not power up.

Yeah i come from a background in car electronics and aftermarket so have dabbles in can decoding, some units will have the power needed as self park features! So high torque output.
I had one tiguan unit on the bench for eeprom swap for the same reason of immobiliser data and is was a 3 pole brushless unit with two encoders and soft joint for torque sense.
For sure an easy modification with the right controller.
Problem is now though i have been looking at some used servo motors!

I reckon you could do a linear actuator and a sim wheel with these motors
