Any advantages of Nvidia 3000 series over 2070 Super on Rift S ?

    Hi,
I have only recently started VR gaming with Oculus Rift S with a 2070 Super and have been blown away. Slightly annoyed I did not wait for a 3000 series card, but am now wondering if it would actually make any difference or if the 2070 Super is already overkill for the resolution and frame rate of the Rift S? What about the Quest 2?

The more graphics power the greater the opportunity for supersampling in VR, but it is a cost Vs performance trade off.

The 30 series is better cost per performance than the 20 series, with the 3080 being in the sweet spot, which really shine if driving more demanding HMDs than the Rift S.

So if you are currently happy with your combo then stick with it until you are ready to also upgrade your Rift S.

Since the demand/supply issues with the 3080 are not expected to be solved until 2021 I would say if your 2070 is doing all you need then why even consider the upgrade at this point. There is always the next best thing coming and at some point we just have to pull the trigger and live with the purchase. Yours seems like a good choice to me.

Better off spending the cash on a Reverb G2 to replace the low res rift-s

Architecturally the 30 series doesn't have any advantage over the 20 series specifically for VR (unlike the shift from the 10 to the 20 series), if that's what you're asking.
Of course raster performance is still much improved on a 3000 series card, so you're gonna see a relatively large improvement from, say, a 2070s to a 3070.

In VR you're gonna want to run supersampling at the highest res you can while keeping your frametimes consistent. While racing this helps with defining objects in the distance such as track signage etc.

To be fair tho, a lot of the improvement from the 20 to the 30 series has been focused on non-raster ops. Given we're unlikely to see raytraced VR titles for quite a while, and given VRSS isn't being implemented at all by game creators, you might want to look into the Radeon 6000 series, which should beat NV at price/perf when it comes to purely raster work.

I think DX12 is on the roadmap for FS2020 which I think will allow raytraced VR. It gets VR on Dec. 23rd but not sure when the plan to go to DX12 is or if it will get hardware raytracing support then. Seen rumors for DX12 but not for hardware raytracing.

Just one title, though - if it does support raytracing. But I think it will eventually. If anyone has more information, I’d love to hear it! :thumbs

Edit - found the most recent dev update that shows on the wishlist that DX12 integration has already started: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/blog-december-3rd-2020-development-update/331255

And looks like fs2020 may not use software ray tracing anyway so moot point for now at least. Big discussion of ray tracing or not here: https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/576712-is-fs2020-ray-traced/

    So I’ll back out now...
