    I am just about to buy a Pimax 5K+ and I wanted to clarify what else I need to ensure motion cancellation:
    • HTC Vive Controller
    • HTC SteamVR Base Station
    Then I put the controller near my head; and the base station somewhere (not on the motion platform) where it can be seen by headset and controller.

    Is that all correct?

    But if it is just for motion cancellation a Vive tracker is easier to mount than a controller: https://www.vive.com/us/vive-tracker/

    One base station will work, 2 will give even better tracking.

    I agree 100% with noorbeast

    The vive tracker is better suited for motion compensation.
    It's much better and easier to mount than the controllers in my opinion.
    I also have pimax 5k+ and initially I used the controller to motion compensate but I was never able to get a very steady image in the pimax due to the very sensitive controller.
    The tracker is sensitive the same way to vibrations and abrupt movements from the motion platform but due to its shape it's easier to mount on the seat.
    You will have to use something to dampen the vibrations but more important is to mount it very rigidly to your seat.

    I had ordered a pair of TrackStraps to mount the trackers on my ankles for walking purposes. But I found that they are perfect to mount the tracker right behind the Sparco seat.

    So now I am confused about the location of the tracker. My understanding is that both the headset and tracker need to have line-of-sight to the base station(s); but it seems that won't be the case if the tracker is behind the seat and the headset is in front of the seat? And where is/are the base station(s) being put?

    The ideal placement of base station is diagonally across an unencumbered play space, with tracker or controller in full view of both base stations. However Lighthouse tracking will still work with one base station, that has an unencumbered view of a tracker or controller.

    With the lighthouse(s) placed high underneath the ceiling (recommendation of Vive) and a placement rather to the sides than front or back BOTH can be tracked quite easily. In case of only one lighthouse I'd place it rather in the space BEHIND (and to the side of) the seat ─ because at least in my tracker setup (see pic) the tracker is more difficult to trace than the headset.

    Pimax arrived yesterday and have eventually got it set up with two base stations and a controller (while I wait for the tracker to arrive from overseas). I was surprised to see that PiTool has a motion compensation option and, from my limited testing so far, it appears to work. Is this what other Pimax users are using? Or the OpenVR Motion Compensation module? Or are these the same thing under the covers?

    OpenVR was forked from OpenVR-InputEmulator, I am guessing Pimax also forked and patched Open VR emulator, but don't know for sure.

    I only ever used the motion compensation integrated in pitools
    I don't know if open vr imput emulator works or not

    I had tried Pimax' motion compensation when it first arrived, but it didn't work for me. If I remember well it needed the tracker/controller positioned at a very exact angle (without allowing adjustment calibration). I am glad to hear that it obviously works now! In that case I'd say stick to it, there is no need to use OVRIE.
    I'm looking forward to my 8K Pimax and will certainly give the inbuilt compensation another try then!

    so whats the word on Pimax? I have the 5k xr oled version but have not used motion compensation with it yet. most of the issues people have been having here have been reported as solved with pitool updates. Still not sure what would be the best rout as I have 2 light houses but not sure if pitools motion compensation or openVR would be better for the same. Also with brain warp fps as low as 30 should be smooth with headset set at 60 hz. Although the lowest I have tried with a gtx 1080 was 72hz and that has been fine.

    If noorbeast is right in assuming that both share basically the same code, I'd first try the Pitool's inbuilt compensation. If compensation is working, then it's okay, isn't it? There is no 110% or 150% working in compensation.;)

    The pitool motion compensation is very basic right now in that it only works with the hand controller laying flat and pointing forward so no way of reorienting the controller to match how you mount it on your rig. It's not a show stopper but makes for more work to attach the controller in a specific way.

    Most of us need some sort of smoothing on the controller input for MC. The pitool MC does not offer any filtering and smoothing and is tracking in its rawest form.

    Some of us have had good results on damping the controller mounts with different materials and playing around with mass. Its all trial and error specific to your own rig.

    I believe the other efforts for MC on github are working on some sort of controller filtering in software. I havent tried those yet so Im not sure how they are going at this time. I'll be looking into it when I get back to my shed in a few weeks.

    So that is why the other guy had the issue with the view after trying to recenter with the motion comp on in pitools. I wonder why it would not allow for the repositioning of the view after setup that's crazy. So their really is no decentering with pitools mc it's all about how the remote is facing and setup. I don't think that's an issue with open vr. After I have everything setup Monday or Tuesday I will try both and report back.

    Some post made me believe that Pimax has improved the software since I first had tried it. But obviously not. It's hard to understand, like Phlames said: "I wonder why it would not allow for the repositioning of the view after setup that's crazy."
    Luckily we have OVRIE. It works with everything inside the Vive ecosystem, Pimax, StarVR ─ so you don't need to worry. Unfortunately not with WMR and my alltime-favourite HMD, the Reverb...:(

    from my 2 day research I have found that most people seem to be using open vr with the pimax. I thought the built in motion compensation would have been great as I still have yet to test it out due to DHL playing with my motion simulator for the pass 4 days. I cant believe it has been in my city since monday and they have yet to deliver it and every day they tell me tomorrow, anyway the pimax 5k xr looks good to me as im not to sensitive to the screen door and the blacks are great plus colors. Motion compensation is the only thing I have been truly worried about. I mean I know it will work with my setup I just want to be sure that 360 yaw will function correctly I have heard some stories about the remotes floating away when the motion compensation was turned on then it corrects its self after you turn it off then back on. im not sure why it would do that with the light house tracking specially if the controller is always in view of the 2 light houses.
