    Welcome @superman

Doing some research before getting in too deep is time well spent.

    Hi all,

I'm a complete newbie to this space, so thought I'd introduce myself first before trying to go and find some of the answers in the deep plethora of knowledge there seems to be in this forum.

I've only just recently purchased my first ever VR headset, an Oculus Quest, which I love, and it's lead me down the path of exploring motion sims. I don't particularly care (not yet, anyway) about become some world-class sim racing driver, I just love the immersion aspect, and would love a half-decent setup that I can then enjoy with friends and family.

I've recently ordered a new laptop (MacBook Pro 16", with 64GB RAM, 8-core i9, and Radeon Pro 5500m), which I actually got for my daily work, but have heard is very capable for driving VR, despite being 'just' a laptop. Of course, I'll need to dual boot windows to actually play any games.

To be frank, what REALLY got me thinking about a motion platform, is spotting the DOF H3 for under £2000, and figuring that I could probably find a way to justify that expense. I am technically minded, and physically capable enough to do some form of DIY project, but realistically with 2 young kids and a full time job, I won't attempt it, as it's something that would likely never get finished. So I'm looking for something as plug'n'play as possible. Is the DOF H3 fairly well respected at all? or is it something that's the subject of mockery :-/ ?

I've also been looking around, and have been eyeing up the Fanatec products for the wheel/pedals. I'm currently deciding between the CSL Elite, and the Clubsport 2.5 coupled with a basic wheel (at least, to begin with ... probably a nice F1-style wheel later). I'll decide which based on my budget closer to the time, but I presume both are well respected solutions here?

Finally, the main thing that's been confusing me about motion sims in general, is the seat. I'm a tall guy - 6'5"/1.95m - and I'm no lightweight either. I gather the H3 handles up to 150kg, and they say people over 2m can use it, so that sounds promising. But where on Earth to do I look to get an appropriate seat from? Does the platform have sliders that the seat clamps to, or do I need a seat specifically that already has sliders?

I don't necessarily expect direct to any of these questions :D but if you could direct me to parts of the forums or specific posts that would make for a good start, it'd be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

There is a dedicated Commercial thread section, with a dedicated DOF thread section where you can review and as questions of DOF owners.

Greetings from Canada! Just signed up last week and thought I'd say hello. Long time developer, ~4 year simracer, new motion... rigger? Ran a similarly sized community in the 00's so nice to be part of one again.

    Cheers

    Thanks!

I just bought an H2 actually; I'm not much of a DIYer yet. Definitely interested in the mod side of things though - motion comp, shakers, might try making a dash etc.

    Hello from CT, USA,

Long time lurker finally transitioned over to a member. Took the plunge and ordered a 3 150mm actuators + a TL actuator from PT-Actuators. Already have a Simetik K2 rig that I am very pleased with, so I am going to build the platforms for the for the TL and my rig to sit on myself. I was inspired by several threads on this site, particularly a thread from DotComRich.

Appreciate the wealth of knowledge I've found on this site and look forward to digging in deeper.

    Regards,
    Tyler
